PostPosted: Jun 14, 2015 18:00    Post subject: My first pocket!!!

Today I found my very first pocket. I have gone on 10 mile hikes into the bug infested wilderness of eastern Massachusetts, but pockets have eluded me. However, I was hanging out at my aunts earlier today, and I was sitting on an old rock wall. I started to examine the mineral makeup of the wall ex diorite, granite, slate. Then I saw it. A little hole in a heavily worn quartz outcrop. The crystals are small, maybe one millimeter faces but they are there!!!!!!!! I still haven't cleaned it out (there are ants inside :D) but that will come later. Any tips on how to remove the pocket would be appreciated. If this is not the correct place for this post please move it. Thanks.

Congratulations, Jared. We need a much better focused picture before we can tell you much about how to proceed.

It appears this vug is on the end of a rock of unspecified size. What is the grain of the rock like? It might be possible to split this vug off most of the rest of the rock with a sharp rap from a hammer on a sharp cold chisel, but there's always a risk. I can't count on my fingers the number of times I've said "Maybe if I... but I shouldn't ... but if I don't, I have a tiny vug on a large rock... Oh, go for it... Oh, (@$*, I should not have done that!" That's part of the learning experience.

You should also look into field guides to mineral collecting in Massachusetts, both in the library and on the web. I used to collect the dumps of the old emery mine in Chester with pretty good success. Just wandering around in the woods is a good way to attract mosquitoes but not necessarily a good way to find minerals.

Thanks Pete I will look into my local library. I split the pocket and revealed that it does not go to far Back. But there are two other smaller pockets to look into.

I could be wrong here so please help me out, but as far as my understanding goes a (vug is to a pocket) the same as a (boat is to a ship) not so?
