PostPosted: Apr 13, 2016 09:30    Post subject: 43rd Annual Rochester Mineralogical Symposium

Looking forward to seeing FMF friends at the 43rd Annual Rochester Mineralogical Symposium which kicks off tomorrow. 168 delegates have registered so far for this 4 day gathering, (as you know) a world-class, award-winning scientific event and always a great time! It's been a couple years since I last presented at the RMS; this year's speakers are really hard acts to follow...daunting even!!!

Brad Wilson: "Collecting Adventures on Baffin Island"
Peter Burns: "The Societal Importance of Uranium Minerals and Mineral-inspired Materials"
Bob Lauf: "Mineralogy of Uranium and Thorium"
John Koivula: "Crystalline Showcases"
Jeff Scovil: "What's New in Minerals"
Bob Martin: "Minerals and Mineralogists of France"
Elise Skalwold: "From Gemology to Mineral Physics and Back Again"
Ken Carlsen & Woody Thompson: "Minerals of the Belvidere Mountain Asbestos Quarries, Lowell-Eden, Vermont"
Michael Bainbridge: TBA (but always entertaining)
And the technical session presentation of papers; abstracts later published in Rocks & Minerals magazine.

While the 43rd RMS was one of the best ever, the finale was nothing less than historic: Michael Bainbridge's overview of the upcoming book was terrific, not only in imagery and delivery, but because Bill Pinch was in the audiance for it!

Perhaps what Elise wrote might not be understood by everyone. Michael Bainbridge, the speaker, is writing a book about Bill Pinch and I feel that every serious mineral collector, the real collector, will want to have this book when it appears. I am not sure what the publication date is, but it should be quite soon.

With respect to the Rochester Mineralogical Symposium, which was started by Bill Pinch 36 years ago, it is perhaps the very best such event one can expect to attend. There is a full slate of great speakers packed into 2 1/2 days plus one evening, a very professionally conducted program which includes a major dinner followed by an auction. There is a room containing about 2 dozen special exhibits brought by symposium attendees and another room for micromounters. All of this is contained in a very fine hotel in the rooms of which a large number of mineral dealers are allowed to sell.

There was only one disappointing aspect of this year's symposium and that was the near absence of curators from mineral museums, large or small. This event traditionally has attracted a broad cross-section of curators from the U.S. and Canada, but today it appears that they can't be bothered. What a shame!

Hi John

I was fortunate to attend the Rochester Symposium in 2014 and would heartily agree that it is a great event - I hope to go again some day. I suspect that the low number of curators reflects the current very difficult state of funding for museums. Certainly in the UK the situation is deeply worrying, with museums closing, others under threat of closure, and the number of "proper" mineralogical, or even geological curators falling year on year.

Let's hope that the "establishment" will soon start to reverse this trend and that we can look forward to brighter times ahead for minerals in museums and for mineralogical curators.

Best wishes

Roy

Hi Roy:

Good to hear from you. Funding may be more of a problem in Europe at this time than it is here. Most of the museums here and in Canada seem to have quite generous travel budgets, after all these curators do not appear to have a problem going to the Tucson Show for a week or more, most often several of them and/or technicians from the same museums. I really do not believe that funding is the problem.

I think the strength of the RMS is in its diversity of delegates, as well as of speakers/topics. Steve Chamberlain does an amazing job of attracting both to the event. Perhaps most importantly, one of the keywords in the RMS invitation is “Fellowship,” a concept this gathering exemplifies under an umbrella of committed educational excellence in the geo-sciences (even extending into natural history, cultural sciences and the arts).

It is significant that this speaks to an audience which includes authors, publishers, hobbyists, students, major collectors and vendors, teachers, professors, research scientists and those with general interest -- a tall order for designing a presentation to hopefully cover all those bases! I was impressed with the number of college students in attendance this year – all actively engaged in the experience and visibly happy to be there throughout the time. While current curators may have been absent this year, retired “old school” ones in attendance are part of what makes this event wonderful – where else could people of all levels of interest find friendly conversation with people such as George Robinson and yourself who have a lifetime of experience in that field?

From the standpoint of a speaker, the enthusiasm and ongoing feedback from this audience is gratifying; the generosity of the Symposium covering all travel and board expenses is appreciated, especially for those of us who are self-funded for such things (the hidden costs behind putting together a one hour presentation are actually quite high). All in all, the Rochester Mineralogical Symposium is one of the best events of the year…and I was especially pleased that there was a serious gemology contribution with its three dedicated presentations – a sign which I take as welcoming for a field that has much to offer mainstream geo-sciences - and in return, hopefully in the future more gemologists will discover the value of attending the RMS for gaining more background in mineralogy!

All best wishes,
Elise

Don't forget that Dave and Kay Jensen were also co-founders.

Very good point. I was remiss in not mentioning the Jensens. I should have added this photograph of Bill Pinch with the man who gave the speech about the first Pinch collection, Michael Bainbridge.
