PostPosted: Jan 19, 2017 17:10    Post subject: Looking to identify Green Minerals surrounding sagenite in agate

Hi, I am looking to identify what green mineral is associated in a sagenitic agate from Arizona. It's only if the green mineral is behind the translucent agate that it looks nice, but if on the surface it's a chalky powdery green that won't polish and you can see where the pits are where it has already weathered out. It's as if the 2 weren't compatible. Then there's a green sagenite? on the surface that seems different then the green powdery mineral. I wondered if the 2 are connected. I want to know what it might be to properly store it. I use wet grinding wheels for lapidary but the rough dry has the green powder from the spots crumbling and want to know what I'm working with. I am going to upgrade the ventilation system above all the work stations.

Here's a pic of the more green lime chalk/powdery kind.. I didn't see the option for multiple photos in one message. I am new here still working on figuring everything out. Thanks for any help identifying!

Based just on observation, it looks very similar to wavellite found here in Arkansas.

Here is one where you can see a green sagenite? under the translucent agate but it also has the green powdery mineral that absorbs water right next to it. This is photographed wet to show the clear agate and mineral inclusions. Lapidary wise anything with the green chalk is waste material but with enough slabs there's gotta be a winner in there where the 2 meshed well. Thanks again for any help with identifying.

I don't believe it looks like wavellite. It looks more like a amphibole like actinolite to me.

Regardless, it will be very difficult for anyone to give you a positive ID without additional information. Pics alone just aren't enough in most cases. Doing some basic tests would narrow things down considerably.

Here's a link to a thread that you should checkout regarding various tests you can perform in order to help better identify what you have - http://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=19487#19487
