PostPosted: Oct 29, 2017 01:58    Post subject: Help identifying rocks

Hello,
I am a newbie to rocks and minerals. I am an artist and I have starting collecting rocks that I found or bought at the bargain bin at the mineral shop to sand and polish and use in jewelry. I need help properly identifying these pieces. Any information that would be interesting to a buyer of jewelry made from these stones would be very helpful. Such as: common name, scientific name, believed "mystical" properties, rarity, or any other interesting info. Thanks so much!!

Such a modest request - only30 minerals without any information about them beyond the photo -as requested for such identifications. I wouldn't count on any 'mystical' properties from this Forum, I doubt many, if any, assign any 'mystical' properties to minerals - you'll find that on esoteric mineral healing et al. sites. I think they take a more scientific approach here.

As stated, I am new to this. I literally don't have any information except what they look like. If you don't have the expertise to identify anything visually, then thank you very much for taking the time to read and check your fedora at the door.

And, as a matter of fact, there is an incredibly massive global community of people who believe in spiritual or mystical properties of stones and minerals of all sorts. I'm literally talking about like billions of people around the globe. Personally, I find them nice to look at and interesting from a scientific perspective and not much more. However, since I intend to make art pieces and jewelry, I feel it would be shrewd to know my demographic, being that people wanting to buy natural stone jewelry are probably believers in these things.

I guess we are experts so will not make guesses based on a photo. There are over 4000 known minerals with new ones being found on a regular basis and we all know how easy it is to guess incorrectly. So sadly we cannot help unless you can do some tests.

I suggest you ask the stores or take them to a club and get an opinion from them as they may be able to do some of the tests required.

ARTSCARY, You have pix of 30 broken pieces of rock or a mineral, some of which are cut and partially polished. I see several that look like pieces of agate and, at least, one that might be a piece of amethyst.

Posting 30 pix becomes very cumbersome so, I personally, don't care to refer back and forth from my reply to your pix and so forth. I agree with the other responders. I also suggest taking your collection to a club meeting, local rock store, or university geology department for identification help. BOB

Could be:
1 - 5 = quartz / chalcedony
6 = maybe basalt
7 = sandstone / quarzite
8 = metamorphic rocks
9 = karstic calcite
10 - 11 = quartz / chalcedony
12 - 13 = metamorphic rocks
14 - 24 = quartz / chalcedony
25 - 26 = metamorphic rocks
27 - 30 = quartz / chalcedony

As stated, you can make some test to check them.
With the ones that are supposedly quartz you should be able to scratch a bottle glass.
Calcite will fizz with muriatic acid.

Ouote" If you don't have the expertise to identify anything visually, then thank you very much for taking the time to read and check your fedora at the door."

Fact of the matter is that no one on the planet has the expertise to identify a mineral or rock solely from a photo with any degree of certainly. That simply shows your inexperience.

As for Mystical properties....the fact that any number of people or even billions believe anything is not proof of anything any more than the lack of belief in something proves something to be false.

But if you can't measure it, then it must fall into the faith category and that is very close to religion. Everyone has a right to religious belief in my opinion so I won't decry it.

If you could do a few simple test the likelihood of an ID goes up exponentially.

Dale

We understand your desire to know what your samples are, but it is too difficult to determine this from photos. If you have a rock shop nearby, or a lapidary club, we would suggest you go there to ask. In case for some reason you can't join a club then you can also try this other web page: https://www.reddit.com/r/whatsthisrock . You can also read Asking: What is it? - Where is it from? and provide us with some basic information about the specimen.

We want to help those who are truly curious, but you need to give us more information before we can help you. Sorry to be so strict but we receive too many queries from people asking more or less similar questions and finally we have been a little bit saturated by those kind of requests without no more information than the images.

Thanks for understanding

Aloha - Stones neither carry healing powers nor can they change ones fate. Participating in false beliefs promotes the phenomenon. They all, however, looks like semi precious and carry little fortune 🙃🙃🙃
