Discovered while collecting rocks along the Eastern shore of Lake Michigan. Some folks that have seen the rock initially believe the word "LUCK" was inscribed. This is naturally occurring and unaltered.

Wow! A message in a stone!
Despite its incredible unusual text, this stone is a piece of a septaria, common near Glenn or South Haven, MI. Also called Lighting Stones, they are concretions of devonian age with calcite veins.
Good luck!

Your rock may have an added feature: The calcite should be fluorescent. Take a look under a UV lamp if you have one.

MARCO C-V may be at least partially correct. The pictured example may be part of a septarian nodule, but much more would be learned if the example was turned around to view the other side. If the central notch continues, encircling much of the whole specimen, then the example is man created to be attached, with a metal clamp (?) to a leather or cloth and worn around the neck or wrist as a pendant or bracelet. On the other side, if those quartz or calcite stringers are also seen and seem to spell a word like G O O D (good luck) that would cement its identification. Even without any other "writing", it still might be a man created artifact.

I have seen some jewelry similar to this in Southern Michigan touristy gift shops. If jewelry, a bather lost it while swimming. A very common occurrence. BOB

Thank you for your input. My wife and I were both scratching our heads when I picked this specimen out of the millions of others along laying on the shore. The more we examined it, the more we were able to see this is a product of natural processes (at least appears to be). Here are additional photos. Appreciate your expertise!
