PostPosted: Jun 27, 2023 12:15    Post subject: Combining two hobbies

I have been a woodworker for as long as I can remember. Up until now our thumbnail collection has been stored in a small 5-drawer cabinet that I made quite a while ago when the collection was much smaller. Now there are too many thumbnails to fit in that cabinet, and I thought it would be nice to be able to display some of them in a lighted case.

We have been looking at options for such a display case and there are several that fit the bill, however they are not inexpensive. I decided to make my own and the following images show the finished product. It holds 72 thumbnails and we are very happy with the outcome. Oh, and it saved over $1000 which can now be put to better use acquiring more minerals instead of display cases.

That is a very nice cabinet. Please say something about its dimensions and the lighting arrangement.

Hi Pete,

The cabinet is 5.5" deep, 32" in height and 21.5" wide. The lights are daylight LEDs 5000K with a 95 CRI sourced from Waveform Lighting. Each LED strip is adhered to an aluminum channel (so the LEDs don't shine in your eyes) that is attached to the underside of the shelves. The channels were also sourced from Waveform as are the wires that connect each strip. The LED power supply is housed in the shallow recess in the bottom of the case.

How do you keep sunlight out of the cabinet? Do you use a blind or a wooden panel, or is it in a part of the house where the sun never shines?

Ah ! Que le monde est grand à la clarté des lampes !
Aux yeux du souvenir que le monde est petit !
Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867).

Ah ! How big is the world in the light of the lamps !
In the remembrance’s eyes, the world is small !

James,
The case is mounted on a north wall and it does not get any direct sunlight. Even so, I was somewhat careful about selecting which specimens to place in it. No specimens that are known to be light sensitive.
