For Carles, the Mineralientage has ended, but for us it has only just begun, because now the flood of photos he will be posting over the next days/weeks will come!

PostPosted: Nov 01, 2023 22:43    Post subject: Re: Munich Show (Mineralientage) 2023

Hello,
I visited the 2023 Munich Show.
I had the extraordinary opportunity to purchase a legendary specimen, a twinned rhodochrosite according to (0001). The profile photo was not easy to make.
It was introduced to me by a Belgian dealer (Crystal Classics) who knows my local papers.
This is an excellent example of the strange twinned “trigonal” port of rhodochrosite from the Poudrette quarry of Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec.
I had previously shown (FMF forum) photos of rhodochrosite in rosettes, more common I believe. This twin habit with the pinacoide (0001) so well developed is surprising for me. This specimen was mined in 1981 from the alkaline massif of Mont Saint-Hilaire.
I had previously shown photos of rhodochrosite in rosettes of rhodochrosite or hemispherical aggregates, more common I believe.

Hello,
I took hundreds of photos in Munich. This prevented me from buying these inaccessible treasures but so beautiful.
Here is a mineral that I didn't know existed and whose name I have difficulty remembering: too many years on the clock of my cerebral Benz !
Nifontovite is a hydrated calcium boron oxide.
Did you know it?
Generally this mineral is poorly formed, in shapeless masses or its crystals are tiny. But in Charcas, crystals reaching cm were found.
When we see its structure, we understand that Nature hesitates to build it.
Boron oxides have very ionic bonds, making them very short.
Boron tetrahedra, and 10-sided Ca polyhedra, I think!
Boron is a weird element. Mendeleev must have had problems with it. I thank boron it for being at the basis of the mineralisation of tourmalines!

Don't miss the Carles Manresa's final posts. At whole, an extensive gallery of images of the Munich Show.
A remarkable effort that you should not overlook!

PostPosted: Nov 04, 2023 14:40    Post subject: Munich Show (Mineralientage) 2023 - A reflection from someone who wasn't there

From extreme gratitude to Carles, a reflection from someone who wasn't there (that's me 😉)

After viewing all the images, I have a slight sense of 'déjà vu,' which would seem to indicate that very few novelties were seen in this edition of Munich. Since I felt this was also the case in the 2022 edition, and yet it doesn't seem to happen as much in Sainte Marie, where several new discoveries are usually seen, could it be that Munich, due to its high costs for exhibitors, is in a way 'pushing out' local prospectors, modest dealers, strahlers, and similar individuals who have always been the ones most actively searching for unusual / abandoned localities?

Thank you for sharing this information about the Munich Show (Mineralientage) 2023 and Carles Manresa's presence there. It's great to know that Carles is providing a virtual tour of the event for those who can't attend in person. PostPosted: Nov 06, 2023 10:04    Post subject: Re: Munich Show (Mineralientage) 2023

Hello,
I visited the Mineralientage every year since 1977, then in the City center, more festive, until 2008 (I was that young !). In total around forty visits.
In my memory, Munich 2019 was colossal, with 6 halls while Munich 2022 was clearly weakened, after Covid.
Munich 2023 has regained a lot of vigor, but with only 4 halls (2 for Mineralogy-Paleontology and 2 halls for Schmuck and prestige gemology).
Over the years, I have seen amazing things there that have educated my eye and my mind.
This show must be visited first and foremost for its Central Mineralogy Expo :
“Sonderschau Objet d’Art”. This year this Expo was incredibly prestigious. It seems that periods of general uncertainty favor the extraction of specimens of stunning beauty and perfection! Some artists' paintings highlighted the beauty of the most beautiful stones.

The red color of tourmaline is attributed (I think so) to the presence of both Mn2+ and Mn3+ or a Mn2+-Mn3+ charge transfer process.
At the end of crystallization of the crystal, the Mn content decreases and iron (Fe2+) occupies the abandoned sites.
If titanium was also present (Ti4+) with (Fe2+), the color would have been green.
The growth of minerals in pegmatites is relatively rapid. It is therefore normal that new additions of manganese do not occur and growth ends with the dominant Fe2+ cations.
If copper also shows up, the elusive magic of Paraiba tourmalines happens.

Hello Jordi, and all,
Silver always captivates the public.
Why? Because this element is rarely isolated to this extent in rocks or because it requires a lot of money to acquire it (this is in fact an impossibility for such a museum piece).
Luckily for me, I prefer crystals…
