PostPosted: Feb 29, 2024 18:08    Post subject: Cinnabar Locality in Transylvania (Romania)

I have acquired an old thumbnail labelled "Cinnabar, Stronior Mts, Transylvania (see pics below). I can not find any reference to the locality. The piece closely resembles Mindat Specimen ID: Y46-Y9G (serendipitously, posted by Jordi Fabre - 10th April 2006) from the Roata Mine, Cavnic, MaramureCounty, Romania. I would like to update the old label and am wondering if anyone knows definitively if "Stronior Mts" would include the Cavnic area of present day Romania, and what protocols are recommended for proper labeling in such a circumstance.

I had never heard of the locality Stronior before, and it doesn't seem obvious to me that it exists, so I cannot help, sorry.

This piece https://www.fabreminerals.com/search_show.php?SECTION=RSRO&CODE=TC86E4 bears no resemblance to the piece you are presenting, neither in the cinnabar crystals nor in the matrix.

I think you have to label it as 'locality unclear'. You cannot move it to some known locality without confirmation that such a move is almost certainly correct

The Stronior Mountains are in Bukovina, Czernowitz District, today part of Ukraine.

See p. 58 in Franz Ritter von Hauer & Franz Foetterle (1855): Geologische Übersicht der Bergbaue der österreichischen Monarchie. (edited in Vienna)

(link normalized by FMF)

A little bit more detailed description you can find in "Österreichische Zeitschrift für Berg- und Hüttenwesen" (1854, p.159).

I don't know much about Ukrainian minerals and not much about cinnabar. But I have seen several good ones from Ukraine, some really similar to the one above.

But they're all from Nikitovka, a mercury deposit which is in the eastern Ukraine, far away from Bukovina which is in the west near the border to Romania ...

The label provides Transylvania as the province, I'll do some more digging ;)
