PostPosted: Dec 24, 2009 09:20    Post subject: Trying to identify the locality of beryl crystals from Brazil?

Any help in trying to identify the locality of the beryl crystals in the accompanying photographs would be appreciated. Over the years they have all been rescued from parcels of faceting rough. The blue ones look similar to the one from Jaqueta, Brazil from Granate's collection. The long thin yellow-green ones have open tubes running their length like straws, and apparently are from Brazil. For the more robust yellow-green ones I have no locality information.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I would say that both kind of Beryl could be from Jequitinhonha valley area. The blue ones maybe from Padre Paraiso and the yellow ones maybe from Pica Pau, but this is just a presumption.

Maybe Luiz Menezes, great expert in Brazilian minerals could help better...

Some good looking crystals there...looks like they could all benefit from a good cleaning though

Wow..trying to identify single beryl crystals from a place where beryl is like leaves on trees...wow thats a hard one..I can only think it must be from one of the 1000+ pegamatites that have produced beryl not counting the alluvial, colluvial, and elluvial deposits which the blue ones look to be from..the yellow-green ones you might be able to nail down a good locale but vthe blues..it's all pure guess on those

It is impossible to be 100% sure, but my guess is that all beryl on the 4 photos might have come from the Catugi - Padre Paraiso - Caraí - Teofilo Otoni area, situated about 90 km North of Teofilo Otoni, on the NE part of Minas Gerais. I am sure the etched blue crystals on the first and second photos are not from the famous Jaquetô pocket discovered on the end of 1990 because the crystals from that major find were not as blue, the color was bluish-green.

This pegmatite district comprises an area of about 100 x 80 km with several hundred different small claims where most of the Brazilian production of aquamarine cutting rough from last century came from; therefore most of that huge production was from alluvial, elluvial or colluvial deposits, only a minor quantity came from primary pegmatite mining. Greenish-yellow and yellow beryl, like the crystals on the other 2 photos, are also commonly found on this area

I wrote an article about Brazilian beryl that was published by Lapis International: https://www.lithographie.org , No.7 - Beryl and its color varieties, my article, Brazilian Beryl, is on pages 84-96, where you can get more info about Brazilian beryl localities.

I wish to thank everyone who tried to help me identify the origins of my beryl crystals. I suspected it might be a nearly impossible task.

Peter, yes they do need a good clean. I was surprised how grubby they looked in the photos.

Luiz, thank you for your expert opinion and the Extra Lapis reference. I am in no way arguing with you, but my camera's colour balance is not perfect and the "blue" crystals tend toward the greenish. The white balance also washes them out a bit, so they are more intensely coloured in reality. Anyway, hopefully it would be safe for me simply to say they are from Minas Gerais.

Best wishes for the festive season.
