|
|
The name of minerals can take from anything's, locations or persons and ….
I think it is interesting that we know about of offspring of these names.
I left a blog about "minerals which are called with Persian name" in mindat .org then the members of mindat.org posted some comments that completed it.
I present this here too:
1-Birunite (Hydrated Calcium Silicate): This mineral was discovered in 1957 and called with this name honoring Aburayhan-e biruni (Great Persian [2] scholar and scientist)).
2- Avicennite( Thallium and Iron Oxides): which was discovered in 1958 and called with this name honoring Avicenna ( Abu-ali Sina) , he was a dignitary physician and astrologer .Also the first classification of minerals was presented by him in his famous book, Shifa[4]
3- Talmessite (Calcium Hydrated Arsenate): This mineral was discovered in 1960 in Talmessi ancient mine beside a village called Talmessi[5] near Anarak[6] , Yazd , Iran .
4- Iranite (Hydrated Plumb Chromate): This mineral was discovered in 1963 in an ancient mine which was located in northern part of Anarak[6].
5- Khuniite (Copper, Zinc, Plumb Chromate): Mr. Adib & Mr. Etman discovered this mineral in Khuni[7] ancient mine in 1970.
6- Anarakite (Copper, Zinc Alkali Chloride): Mr. Adib & Mr. Etman discovered this green color mineral in Anarak[6]and chose the name of that area for this kind of green mineral in 1972.
7- Khademite (Aluminum Alkali &Hydrated Sulfate):This mineral was discovered by Mr.Barian ,Birthlon and Sadrzadeh in Saghand, Yazd, Iran and called with this name honoring Mr.Nasrolah-e Khadem ,the president of Geological Survey of Iran [8]at that time.
8- Zircon(ZrSiO4): from the AZARGUN/Λzær g כ: n/ or ZARGUN /zær g כ: n/ .
AZAR meaning is fire and ZAR meaning is gold coin/ gold and GUN is a suffix to means "the same".
The meaning of ZARGUN is "alike gold" and AZARGUN is "alike fire" referring to one of the many colors that the mineral may display.
9- Turquoise: Russian name of Turquoise - Бирюза - is corrupted Persian name "FIRUZEH ".
Turquoise is a famous mineral, gemstone in Iran
10- Cinnabar: from the Persian word SHENGERF [∫əngərf] and meaning is orange red color (dragon's blood). Maybe cinnabar takes from this color.
But when we see the other names of cinnabar in other language, Zinnober in German, Cynober in polish and Cinnober in Danish, maybe we must conjecture the cinnabar takes from SENOBAR[senobær]= spruce , pinon , pine because of red color if we accept that taken from Persian.
11- Kermesite: from the Persian GHERMEZ [ qermez (q as in Iraq) ] . The meaning of GHERMEZ is red color in Persian and used by ancient alchemists to indicate the powder of the oxide of antimony, with its typical red color.
Yes, the meaning Of Kermes [ ghermez, qermez (q as in Iraq) ]=red color in Persian.
12- Azurite and Lazulite: both from the Persian word LAZHUWARD or LAJEVARD ( lΛjəværd) and meaning is blue sky .
I hope you enjoy, but let me know your comments, please.

Asslalam aleykom. Chutor Hasti?
Tachakor! Very interesting, especially the meaning of the words in Persian, Farsi!
In the Sorbonne Mineral Museum in Paris we can study some very interesting mineral specimens from Iran but otherwise we see very little.

Dear Peter
Yes, in the first classification, Avicenna classified minerals to four basic groups:
1-Stone and soil materials
2-Combustible material
3-Salts
4- Metals
This is all of my information about this classification.
Thanks for your attention and your Persian word ;=)

Really interesting. I must admit that until today, I wasn't interested in minerals from Iran, but this evening I had spent a pleasant time looking at photos on Mindat and I have seen wonders specimens.
Thank you for the information and links.
