Thanks Tobi. I have often wondered why the Viburnum Trend district produces galena crystals with such a varied morphology, including equant cubes, cuboctahedrons, spinel twins, and elongated bars. I'm not aware of any other area that produces such a variety.

You're right, there's an amazing variety of galena crystal forms from that area. And your little galena bar is one of the prettiest I have ever seen from there, a beautiful combination.

The new wulfenites from the La Morita Mine were getting quite a bit of attention at the Denver Show. There was a plentiful supply and prices were all over the place, so it paid to shop around. From what I was told the mine is not too far distant from the famous mimetite locality of San Pedro Corralitos and the mimetites are certainly very similar to ones from that location. The mine was originally exploited for lead and silver. Currently mining operations are extracting barite for use as drilling mud. Hopefully we will see more wulfenite from this location in the future.

A white cap/white stripe amazonite has been on my wish list for nearly a decade. It's not that there were none available - just not one that met my size and price criteria. My patience was finally rewarded when the one pictured below turned up. It was my most exciting find of the Denver Show.
This specimen was collected May 25, 1996 by Ray Berry on a claim that later became the Smoky Hawk Mine.
Mineral: | Microcline var. amazonite with Albite var. cleavelandite |
Locality: | Smoky Hawk claim, Crystal Peak area, Teller County, Colorado, USA | |
