There is an error on page 59 of Stories in Stone. The rock described as rhyolite, in the text and caption to the photograph, actually is a feldspar-rich syenite.

I think the rough texture is just natural etching of exposed surfaces, with the smoother faces protected by whatever mineral the crystal was embedded in originally. | |
