Actually, I have been doing so for some time already. Not with a Canon, but using a Lumix G9. The pictures can be stacked either internally, by the camera, or externally using third-party software.

Furthermore, considering the looks and weight, I would say that the sample probably is a slag from a smelter.

As I mentioned earlier in the post, and concurring with Mr. Stingl opinion, I believe that your samples are mostly chert concretions and some calcite crystals.

I have seen this happening in small ponds in caves, where the carbonate form a thin crust or "islands" supported by surface tension. I guess that eventually, these flocculate to the bottom.
