Jordi, I have a "goblet" calcite crystal like yours (but of course not nearly as beautiful) with the only locality information being China. Were these crystals found in multiple localities, or can I use the locality info you provided with your crystal and apply it to mine?
Paul, your calcite" faden" looks like a cousin to my own calcite "feather" (for that's what it makes me think of) which I posted in my collection thread, and shown again below.

Wenshan is the name of the city around which three mines seems supply these Calcites (170 km. around, according Berthold Ottens China's book). The name of these three mines are: Laochang, Dulong and Dayakou, and as fas as I know is not clear from which of them these Calcites appears. That's why I use Wenshan, just like a mining area name.
Other people use also Malipo or Gejiu, names of two other main villages close Wenshan.
As far as I know, no other mines in China supply currently these kind of "goblet" Calcites, but China is still very complicated in terms of minerals localities, so please take all this info as a probability, not as a secure datum ;-)

Nice calcite, Tracy. The specimens do look like they were neighbors, at one time. I saw that
the chinese dealer in Tucson still had multiple specimens of these available this year.

This might well be a calcite pseudomorph after andradite, but it is not. Its surprising rhombododecahedral habit is indeed typical of garnets.
Overall size: 70 mm x 40 mm x 35 mm. Major crystal size: 35 mm across.
From Berry Materials Corp quarry, North Vernon Plant, NE edge of North Vernon, Jennings Co., Indiana, USA.

A fine calcite, Carles, the pseudo-garnet crystal shape is very interesting (and very nice, too).
And Paul, that 17 cm specimen from China is really a stunning piece, very beautiful!

Let's try this as a funky calcite from La Sirena Mine. Acquired in Guanajuato on May 31, 1995. It is 7.5 x 7.0 x 3.5 cm.

Gail, when your outstanding Calcites? ;-)

While we're awaiting Gail's marvels... how about a little in-between snack?
I'm afraid I don't have any hexagonal calcites to show, and I do not even know how to describe the shapes below better than calling them complicated. The group is attached to the side of a little mountainscape of lustrous black Hausmannite from the N'Chwaning II Mine, Kuruman, N.Cape, SA which came into my possession in June 2009 (collection id 09ZAHc001, overall specimen size 36x25x17mm).
At the time, I wasn't quite sure about the decorations being calcite, so I was looking for a visible proof of birefringence. Most of the many faces are frosted and several of the smooth faces are obstructed, but in one direction it is possible to look through a crystal onto what's beyond. So I positioned the tip of a wooden toothpick there. All four pictures are crossed-eyes stereo pairs taken through the microscope (with halogen lighting and white LED fill-in).

A curiosity from Spain.
Let’s see: some scalenohedrons of Calcite once existed in the pocket. They are now long gone and all that remains is the form of the faces of the old Calcite crystals that have been preserved by the coating of Quartz that formed on them.

Here is a different view of the calcite forms, under UV light.
Description: |
Concretion from the Karnes Uranium district. Red fluorescence is scalenohedral form of calcite, thin pink wisps are veins of rhombohedral calcite, and the green fluorescing areas are chalcedony. Shortwave UV. |

Hi folks. Thought I would add a calcite here from my collection. Calcite, dolomite, and marcasite from a location probably better known for its quartz.
