Hi, Vic!

Many thanks for publishing your pictures at FMF again.

It would be better, however, to group several photos together in a single post. Just to prevent the system from sending so many email messages to the every subscriber.

Please, keep posting.

Close up of large the piece from previous photo-some of the calcite is lilac in color. What might be the coloring agent, please?

Usually, pink, red or lilac colors are attributed to cobalt but I believe that excepting some particular cases (like Bou Azzer or Congo calcites for example) the color is due either the atomic structure or the color centers.

Vic:

Does it fluoresce? If so, the chromophore may well be manganese. The only way to be sure, of course, is a chemical analysis, unfortunately.

There seems to be two generations of growth, the base growth glows orange and the overgrowth glows a faint pink under longwave.

Vic, what is its size? Approximately. I guess it's a quite heavy specimen, isn't it?

Carles, the piece has a bit of matrix on the rear so it's weight is around 22lbs. The size is indicated by the scale in this photo. Over 100lbs. came out of the pocket-split 3 ways.

1 cm. hoppered galena crystal found in a calcite seam at the Lanes Quarry. The contact of the basalt with the underlying silt-stone shows small amount of sulfide veining . South, along the traprock ridge, is found the Newgate Prison / copper mine.
