Progress on the outbuilding continues quickly! Today it was pretty much covered and the roof was being installed.
In the short term, miscellaneous boxes, packing materials and furniture will be stored there to give room for the rest of the exhibit cases to be installed in the gallery. In the longer term there may be work space for specimen preparation, continued storage for packing materials, exhibit design materials and work space, etc.

Pat Reagan designed and built this amazing gift shop counter, complete with a really interesting Brazilian conglomerate.
The gift shop is scheduled to open on July 5.

I'll bet you'd like to see some minerals again...
George & Susan Robinson worked over the weekend installing the Beauty of Minerals gallery near the main gallery entrance. Wow!
A few of the specimens are still in secure storage and well be returned to exhibit soon.

The staff are now also working on the Keweenaw Gallery installation. This will be one of the largest galleries in the museum. The history of mining in the Keweenaw exhibits are almost completely reinstalled here.

Wait, wait, back up... what is that counter-top made of? that's natural?!?
Watching the progression of the construction and installations is really a treat. Hope to see more images of the displays. Thank you so much for taking time to share with all of us!
Cheers!
Elise

There is discussion among the staff about whether or not the counter top is natural. We are told it is from Brazil... Dr. Robinson thought, at least initially, that it was not natural; however, Dr. Bornhorst thought there were some congomerates like that. I'll see if I can dig a little deeper.

The exhibits illustrating the different geological environments that native copper occurs in the Keweenaw Peninsula are being installed. Here are a few images of the conglomerate exhibit- famous for the "copper skull" specimens.

On June 28 many of the best Michigan copper specimens were put back on display! Here are two cases- the first I showed empty a few images above. You really need to see these in person!

How nice to see JTR1642 back on exhibit. It is one of my favorites- a dodecahedral-tetrahexahedral copper crystal with a lovely patina on quartz with epidote. It is from the Quincy Mine, and formerly in the John T. Reeder collection. |

Douglas Hougton's portrait is now all enclosed in its brand new and lovely frame, behind glass. Nice to have been able to photograph it before it was put behind the glass, but it is also nice to have it protected and so nicely exhibited.
