This quartz is 10 cm long and 3 cm across...I got it out of an old collection in Mexico but am extremely dubious that it is from there. No matrix, no nothing except this very distinctive sharp phantom of what appears to be chlorite. The green has none of the brown associated with many chlorites, so it could be more in the celadonite or fuchite realm.
Hard to believe this doesn't have relatives
Be very grateful if someone can make this a specimen again!

My immediate reaction was Madagascar. It is typical.

Hi Peter,
My first reaction was Madagascar.
About 10 years ago I got some crystals from a friend. He has bought them in 1991 on the St. Marie aux Mines show.
The crystals look the same as yours. They are only very small, about 2 cm. The green color is very typical.
They were labeled: quartz with chlorite phantom; (Anovitra ?), Ihosy, South Madagascar,
Madagascar.
Anovitra gives no hit in Google, but Ihosy leads to a Mindat page:
https://www.mindat.org/locentry-485338.html
All the crystal are sold to gem cutters, so I can't send you a picture. The picture is in my head, but unfortunately there is no USB connection from my head to the computer.
Greetings,
Herman

I would also say Madagascar (Fianarantsoa) -> Quartz from Fianarantsoa

So Peter has four votes for Madagascar. We are rarely this unanimous ;))

Assuming we have a quorum, I can live with four "yeas" for Madagascar and put on a label I'm comfortable with. Anyone know when they first came out? Herman notes a find 10 years ago, but the guy whose collection this came from stopped adding to his collection at least 15 years ago.
BTW if any of you get a chance to get to Amsterdam, Herman has an extensive reference collection that is worth a visit (assuming he's home and willing). I had a delightful time with him last month!

Peter, thank you for the compliments. We had a great afternoon looking at and talking about minerals.
For all the friends of FMF: When you visit the Netherlands you are welcome to visit me. It’s always great fun showing my collection to other collectors. I'm retired, but still have a busy life, so please inform me by email when you prepare your trip.
Greetings,
Herman
