The last 2 specimens (1230522 jpg; 1240107 jpg) are no longer in our collection as a good friend showed an interest in them.

Pierre
That is what good (mineral) friends are for!
Thank you for the photos and regular news - I will try to remember to add a photo of Ceres, Scotland to your thread so that people can see the difference in landscape and temperature (I shall be there over the Xmas season and I sure the temperature difference will be clear even in a photo)

Hi James. It is an absolute pleasure to be a part of this forum. Thanks to you and others who make this possible. There seems to be a number of places across the world with the name Ceres. Please add a photo of Ceres, Scotland. Needless to say, should you ever visit Ceres, SA, you are welcome to our home.

Description: |
Opal (variety hyalite) on smoky quartz. Erongo mountains; Namibia 60 x 42 x 24 mm The hyalite opal (32 x 22 mm) has an even better colour in person, very much like jelly. |

Hello Pierre,
Those are some nice specimens that you and Riana added to your collection. I especially like the aegirine from Mt. Malosa. It's a very aesthetic piece.

Hi Don. Thank you for the compliment. That is indeed a strange type of quartz! The shape is very unusual, and the small attached crystals (to us) unknown, but the yellow coating needs explaining as it does not come off in oxalic acid. I see one major dealer calls it citrine, but I am quite convinced he is wrong. Perhaps it is a coating of iron oxide on quartz with a final thin protective layer of clear quartz. Best regards from us both.

A wonderful post, as usual. Nice job both of you. But you've ruined the continuity! A smithsonite? I know change up is good, but, I was so enjoying all the SiO2.
(I obviously misread the title of the thread, I thought I was quartz collecting S.A.)

Haha Vic, this is our collection!!! I wish we collected all these ourselves. The other thread is Quartz collecting in SA. I am starting this new day with a self collected specimen (i found in Riana's pocket). This cluster is far better in person and no matter how many photographs, I just cannot do it justice. Best regards:-)

Very nice cluster of clear quartz. It is nice that Riana lets you dig in Riana's pocket :-)

Most "citrine" on the market is really heat-treated amethyst, wherein it takes on a similar hue to your piece (real citrine is usually more subdued and more greenish). Perhaps your quartz was heated on one end, either naturally or artificially?

Hi Rei. Eish! I don't know what to make of your explanation of the yellow colour?! but who knows what these dealers are up to! :-):-)

They seem inclusions of iron oxides coating multiple growing phantoms located very close of the surface of the crystals...

Hi Jordi. That was my first impression too. I studied the specimen again and if you tilt it, you can see the shine of a very thin final coating of quartz over the iron oxide. A section close to the base has a few small bits of yellow oxide trapped in a thicker layer of quartz. Thank you for your input.

Ignore the woo-woo stuff, and it's spot on. Shape and color-wise, yours matches heated amethyst. Now, that can happen naturally... but usually it's done artificially, because amethyst is cheap and citrine is more expensive.
