That was what grabbed me about the specimen. They are almost dodecahedrons.

Here are a few rarities... A huge Cryo-Genie Morganite and a rare, unrepaired matrix Himalaya specimen.
Mineral: | Beryl ( variety morganite ) with Elbaite on Albite (variety cleavelandite) |
Locality: | Cryo-Genie Mine, Warner Springs, Warner Springs District, San Diego County, California, USA
|
Dimensions: | 121 x 91 x 70 mm |
Description: |
A large, lustrous, peach-colored Beryl (var. Morganite), measuring 88 x 63 x 38 mm, is perched on a matrix of lustrous blades of white Albite (var. Cleavlandite) and recrystallized clear Quartz. Lustrous crystals of Elbaite to 10 x 2 mm, in both pink and green color, richly cover the Cleavlandite. It has great clarity and can be seen through completely. There is a very good repair, which is common for these pieces. This is a huge Morganite for the County, and exceptional and rare for the Cryo-Genie, in excellent condition. |

Dimensions: | 175 x 93 x 85 mm |
Description: |
This large cabinet specimen of Elbaite is dominated by a large buff-colored Orthoclase crystal measuring 90 x 75 x 60 mm which anchors many blades of snow-white Albite (var. Cleavlandite) to 30 mm across. Nestled within the Albite are four large Elbaites, the largest measuring 51 x 30 x 19 mm, in varying shades of green and pink, complemented with a book of pale purple Lepidolite to 21 mm across. A sharp, pale-pink 24 x 15 mm Beryl (var. Morganite), a rarity from the Himalya Mine, is also nested in the Albite. Several clear Quartz points to 25 x 9 mm are also present. Matrix specimen from the Himalaya Mine are not common, and this is a large and historic specimen (ex. Gary Hansen, c. 1967-1970 specimen; ex. James W. Simpson collection) in great condition. |

Hi, Bob!
Very interesting your Himalaya mine specimen. As you state, for having a matrix, its large dimensions, and the presence of beryl, not common in that deposit. However, as you no doubt are aware of, the name morganite should not be used in the Mineral lines, since one can only write IMA species there. Would you mind me correcting it for you?

|
|
For flashback Friday, this is one that got away -- I had to sell it to pay for the mining project ...
Mineral: | Grossular |
Locality: | Sierra de las Cruces, Sierra Mojada mining district, Municipio Sierra Mojada, Coahuila (Coahuila de Zaragoza), Mexico
|
Dimensions: | 20 cm |
Description: |
The specimen is approximately 20 cm across, and the largest Grossular crystal is about 7 cm long. The matrix is a mixture of fine grained clear to whitish garnets and what is likely wollastonite. This specimen was collected by Graham Sutton and Bob Griffis in December 1993 from an isolated hill (Cerro de Moka) at the south end of the Sierra de Cruces mountain range. The garnet-bearing outcrop was at the top of the hill and was completely removed over 2 field trips. After spending about 80 hours using an air scribe to carefully expose the garnets from their enclosing matrix, the specimen was sold to Dennis Beals who did more work on it. He then sold it to the Freiburg Museum, where it is now in the Pohl collection. Someday, I would like to see it again!
Photo is a scan of a pre-digital print, so excuse the quality, and note that it represents the specimen prior to Dennis performing additional preparation work. |

Michael, here is one I had photo'd before. They often are this color in some of the larger pieces, and not quite so clean as yours--not surprising given the skarn origin. Some are also found with Epidote.
I know I have a few others I'll try to get to soon.
Mineral: | Grossular |
Locality: | Coyote Range, Bishop, Bishop District, Inyo County, California, USA
|
Dimensions: | 67 x 65 x 62 mm |
Description: |
This fine specimen has several cinnamon colored, gemmy, lustrous Grossular crystals, the largest measuring 60 x 48 x 43 mm in size. Unlike most garnets from this locality, these are freestanding and complete Grossular crystals. One of the smaller crystals has a ding, but the large crystal is intact. |

Here is a piece...not great, but special to me as I was able to collect it from inside the mine.
Mineral: | Fluorite on Quartz with Pyrite |
Locality: | Sweet Home Mine, Mount Bross, Alma District, Park County, Colorado, USA
|
Dimensions: | 157 x 112 x 56 mm |
Description: |
Light purple cubes of lustrous, transparent Fluorite to 12 mm cover a matrix of white needles of Quartz to 17 mm long with brassy Pyrites to 17 mm and less crystallized black sulfides. One portion of the specimen is in excellent condition, and it should be trimmed, but as is it is more geologically interesting. The back side is fully covered with fine needle Quartz and accented with black sulfides and brassy Pyrites. I self collected this on September 9, 2001 in the main haulage tunnel. |

Mineral: | Laumontite with Calcite |
Locality: | Pine Creek Mine, Scheelite, Bishop District (Tungsten Hills District), Inyo County, California, USA
|
Dimensions: | 112 x 102 x 77 mm |
Description: |
Slender, well-formed, twinned, prismatic Laumontite crystals to 70 mm long form a slightly diverging cluster. The terminations are classic fish-tail twins. Yellow Calcite crystals accent the Laumontite crystals. These specimens have been well preserved and looks like they may survive in spite of the mineral being so unstable. This is an excellent specimen from this long ago closed tungsten mine. |
