Hello all:
I thought you might be interested in some chert exposure maps I am creating for Iowa. I am doing it one county at a time and have Henry and Washington counties done. I am working on Louisa County right now. It takes awhile to publish each map because I am ground-truthing as I go. You can go to:
https://www.rollinghillsconsulting.com
(link normalized by FMF)
and click on County Chert Maps to access them. If you follow RHCS on Facebook, you will be notified when the next map is up.
Hope this is helpful!
Chad

This is a huge, gemmy Baryte, the best I've seen so far from the Linwood mine. It is a cluster of large, parallel growth twin crystals, two of which show double terminations and are 10.5 cm long. One stands higher than the others, making the whole specimen 12.5 cm X 7 cm, 4.5 cm thick. The Baryte's color could be mistaken for smoky quartz and it shows very good transparency for such a large Baryte. You can see your finger through it. A remarkable addition to our "monumental" Baryte collection. I mounted it in a removable base to stand it up.

Here's a nice calcite from the Linwood Mine.

One more, a lovely double terminated Baryte group on limestone from the Linwood Mine. The Linwood mine produces some interesting Baryte and very fine calcites and Barytes. This one consists of a remarkable group of gemmy smoky Barytes with glassy surfaces, well separated and beautifully defined on a limestone matrix, a very aesthetic specimen.
Description: |
Baryte on limestone Linwood Mine, Buffalo, Iowa, USA The specimen is about 11 X 6.5 X 2.5 cm The largest crystal is 8 cm long, 2 cm thick and doubly terminated, as are most of the smaller crystals. There are crystals on both sides of the limestone. |

The locality for this piece was vague. The label simply says "Near Ollie, Iowa".

Mineral: | Calcite, Aragonite and Dolomite (variety ferroan) on Quartz |
Locality: | Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa, USA | |
|
Dimensions: | geode is about 3.3 cm, calcite is 0.7 cm, aragonite spray is 1.3 cm |
Description: |
