PostPosted: Aug 31, 2016 08:14    Post subject: Question about preserving weddellite specimens

Hi all,

Does anyone know whether weddellite specimens have any stability issues in collections? I'm contemplating the acquisition of a rather large crystal for the species and want to know if it will hold up well mounted in a TN box and kept away from strong light and heat, or if very special precautions need to be considered.

Any and all observations and feedback are much appreciated!

Thanks,

Jim

Jim,
Weddellite is a hydrous species [Ca(C2O4)•2H2O] and undergoes a dehydration reaction upon simple exposure to the atmosphere. I have no real-world experience that would indicate how quickly the reaction occurs. Light should not be a factor.

That the analytical work is on synthetic materials rather than natural ones, suggests the reaction is probably pretty quick. There are methods of encapsulating minerals to prevent dehydration reactions, but mounting in a perky box will probably lead to your having less a weddellite and more a whewellite.
