When out in the countryside I cannot resist the urge to check what is on the ground. Some years ago while climbing an old volcano (apparently it erupted about 297 million years ago) I noticed a 'rock' that was wrong for the typical layers around me, so like so many of us I had to pick it up and have a look at it. I then took it home and forgot about it until I recently saw a video from La Palma of a similar rock flying through the air and then rolling to a halt (but that one was larger and still very hot)
I believe it is a volcanic bomb as it shows layers of cooling and cracking. Just a fun find - there clearly are some very small crystals within it as you get flashes from reflections as you rotate it. A quick search suggests it will be an olivine or quartz dolerite

Self collected, they weather out and can be found as one hikes Upper Loop to Tony's trail (603), or heads up the nearby gully. Fun for children just starting to collect as you can pick up (normally broken or damaged) crystals from the dirt on the trail |
