Yes, definitely!
Would look even better with a real black background when shooting your photos.
I know, that requires extra work but it’s worth it.

Of course, much better. And a great color contrast. And a nice horizon line (as defined by Steve Smale).

New specimen - fluorite from Namibia:
Sadly, there's no chance to make a good photo :-( I tried and tried and tried, but no matter what light, what background or what camera angle, the extremely lustrous fluorites just look crappy on every picture. Actually it is a very appealing and undamaged specimen of vivid green fluorite in association with grey quartz, but I can't make a photo that does that nice specimen justice :-(

Even if it doesn't do your specimen justice, this is a pretty good photo Tobi...
You can maybe try a "softer" background than the immaculate white which makes the contrast too harsh in my opinion.

New specimen - smoky quartz from Switzerland:
(This is a really major specimen and centerpiece in my collection, the size is very impressive and as a collector of quartzes and a lover of alpine specimens, I'm glad to have such a large alpine cleft quartz in my collection.)

Here you can see that it is not damage what is visible on the top, it is a kind of incrustation where brighter parts of the quartz have grown over the nearly black parts of the crystal. |

Old specimen, better photo - quartz from Madagascar:
This quartz cluster from Madagascar was one of the first specimens that I posted nearly 10 years ago, https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewtopic.php?p=4621#4621 , it was the centerpiece of my collection back then.
10 years later I own many specimens that are much better, so this one isn't anymore in my main display and became a decoration piece in the living room. Nevertheless I thougt it is quite beautiful (though it has some dings and cracks, as many of the large Madagascar quartz clusters have) and should be captured in a better photo.
P.S. In my old post from 2009, I had the information that this specimen was from Antananarivo Province. Today, with a little bit more knowledge on Madagascar minerals, I'm quite sure it is (as most of these large specimens from this country) from the Itremo Massif in Amoron'i Mania.
Mineral: | Quartz |
Locality: | Itremo Massif, Itremo, Ambatofinandrahana District, Amoron'i Mania Region, Fianarantsoa Province, Madagascar | |

Tobi, I have just spent hours going through the photos of your collection. As a relatively new collector, I am in awe of the quality and magnitude of your collection. Thank you for sharing these!
I found many of your fluorite specimens of particular interest. I won't be able to rest now until I have found both a perfectly clear and a black example for my own collection. :)

I won't be able to rest now until I have found both a perfectly clear and a black example for my own collection. :) | Thank you so much for your kind words of awe and wonder :-) My collection may have some nice and rather good specimens, but you'll find better collections with more valuable specimens in this forum and I highly recommend to browse the many other collector's galleries here!
And I have to correct the "magnitude": For lack of being rich I often have to sell specimens when I want to purchase new ones that are better. My collection thread reaches back over ten years and most of the many many specimens on this 44 pages are no more in my collection. Some years ago I began to focus on the "quality, not quantity" rule, some of the hardest lessons for many mineral collectors ;-) So my displayed collection is just one showcase in the living room with "only" ~110 specimens, I discarded nearly 30 (!) during the last months - and this hard decision was a good one! You mention that you are a new collector, so I give you this advice, I needed more than 25 years of collecting to finally follow it, many people in this forum will agree to this. Today, I give away maybe up to 10 minor specimens to purchase really good ones like the large alpine smoky quartz above - and it's worth it :-) So please keep this in mind: Spend your budget on the best specimens you can afford, not matter if you have 10 dollars or 1000 or a million ;-)
And concerning fluorite: Indeed this is and always will be my favourite mineral, I share this passion with a lot of collectors, also with you ;-) If you search for a perfect black specimen, this is a tough task, black fluorites are quite rare. Concerning your goal to get a perfect clear one, there are many options because fluorite is often clear. Maybe one here in our forum can help, you could post a request in the mineral exchange area: https://www.mineral-forum.com/message-board/viewforum.php?f=20
Good luck and thanks again for your words concerning my collection :-)
Tobi

That is good advice and a viewpoint that I have slowly been moving towards. For as long as I can remember I have brought home interesting rocks. I then managed to find a few low-quality mineral samples close to home. Each one was a treasure to me.
My wife and I went to our first mineral show almost three years ago and we both caught the bug. We must have come back from the first show with ~25 specimens all ranging in quality and species. We went again last year and only came back with eight pieces, even though we had spent three times as much money compared to the first trip. We plan on continuing to narrow our focus.
We still don't have a consistent theme, but Fluorite and Barite are starting to become more prevalent. Having limited space at the moment also helps keep things in hand, I just gave around a dozen specimens to a friend's son that has become interested in minerals.
As for acquiring some clear Fluorite, that will have to wait. We recently purchased three pieces that we are still waiting for to arrive. My wife is very good at being the voice of reason and stopping me from spending our savings on minerals :)
Cheers,
Richard
