PostPosted: May 19, 2019 09:23    Post subject: Calcite label states Mexico but no location

I purchased a flat of specimens at auction, all of the specimens where labeled with country and quarry or mine location, except this specimen. Any idea where this specimen may of come from in Mexico, I have researched calcite from Mexico on Mindat and came up empty. It is possible the label was wrong and its from a different location.

Just a guess, but when it is from Mexico, it could be from Charcas, https://www.mindat.org/loc-2296.html , a locality that produces many colourless calcites in different shapes. And I think I have also seen some specimens from Charcas that were similar to yours ...

This may be from one of the mines in Guanajuato, La Sirena or Valenciana?

Thank you, I will look at Mindat to see the specimens, I realize that calcite is such a common mineral and a locale ID will be more of guess than positive ID.

Unknown, as the original label stated only calcite and viewed with a loupe they appear to have a tannish yellow staining over a white crystal base. Also very small dark inclusions.

I found on line a similar specimen that comes from San Luis Potosi, Charcas, Mexico. The small yellow tan balls found on the calcite may be stilbite.

I was also wondering what these crystals are on the edge of the specimen.

The yellow balls are probably dolomite.

Quartz is the most likely underlying species...is it at all amethystine?

Hi Peter,
Clear quartz with some dark inclusions, no discernible color to indicate amethyst.
