Here‘s a photo of my mineralogical Christmas tree in the snow:

This is actually an arborescent gypsum growth I found in a sulfur fumarole on Shintake volcano on subtropical Kuchierabu island. Such things form when sulfuric acid vapors attack calcium-bearing minerals (anorthite and augite) in the surrounding lava. A few years after I collected this, the volcano erupted and buried everything under a thick layer of ash, and the human population was evacuated, so there won‘t be any more of these for a while.
