Aside classics such as "One Hundred Years of Solitude", what makes the pleasure of reading great is finding small jewels that connect with us in a unique way. In my case that small jewel is "Rituals" and its author is Cees Nooteboom. It is as if it were part of my life as it happens to me with some other book like "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robert M. Pirsig or the "The Left Hand of Darkness" by Ursula K. Le Guin |

Firmo,
Thanks for posting the orchid photos from the Medellin fair. My wife loves orchids and she maintains a small collection of mostly Phalaenopsis sp. but also has a few Cattleyas and Oncidiums.

Some orchids from the Lankester Botanical Gardens in Cartago, Costa Rica, one of the major centers for orchid research in both Central America and the Caribbean.
Take care and have a safe weekend.

I'm partial to the Jalapeño & Cheddar variety of Cheez Its myself, unfortunately they are not available in Canada. Both of your selections are great choices.

Hi Michael.
I check that your wife has a similar taste for flowers than yours for minerals. Both of you cultivate extreme beauty inside home.
Dedicated to your wife and by extension to all women goes this post of orchids with the winner of the 2014 contest.

Thanks Firmo. The winners that you posted are all spectacular. As you probably know the orchid family is the largest flowering plant family in the world. I'm just glad she isn't a species collector :>)
Dany, the Lankester Botanical Gardens in Cartago, Costa Rica look like a great place to visit. Will have to add that to our bucket list.

The bonsai are magnificent. Did the labels give the information of how many years old they are? I know some of them can successfully grow for decades.

Hi Susan,
Yes the labels do tell the age on some of the bonsai. I took a picture of some of the labels but we were in a bit of a rush.
Here is some information from the internet:
At 390 years old, the Japanese white pine was already notable as the oldest specimen in the bonsai collection at Washington, D.C.'s National Arboretum. Aug 3, 2015. So I guess that the white pine is 390+ 5 years old now;-)
I will look for a picture of that tree. Don't know if I can find it.
Some of the bonsai are passed down through several generations. Great-grand to grand to descendant.
I tried growing some bonsai years ago but found that minerals were easier to care for since minerals don't have to watered so often or fertilized and trimmed ;-)
Please stay safe.
Don

Susan,
The first picture I posted from the National Arboretum may be the 390 year old white pine behind my wife, Gwen and son, Richard. Richard lives in DC and he took us to see a marker near Jamestown,VA dedicated to Gwen's 10th great grandmother, Temperance Baley (Bailey) and to the annual meeting of the Jamestowne Society, of which they are both members.
Thank you for your comment about the bonsai pictures.
Stay safe.

I like plants, I like animals, I like books (paper books) and I like Ethology. I don't like people who take advantage of the work of others.
Today the Spanish government finally decided to stop all non-essential activities. The funny thing is that they consider that as a kind of advanced vacations tying with the Easter vacations. What does it mean? That the State will not pay its part because as it is a kind of "advanced vacations" the employees will receive their salaries at full now, and on returning to work they should trade some posterior vacation days. Of course the State didn't before this more strict confinement in order to tie the Easter vacations with these "advanced vacations" and force the owners of the business to pay for these salaries. As they will have no income due the lock out the catastrophic economical consequences are highly predicable.
