Hi Everyone, I'm Julie Wilson.
I am very much a newbie in this world but am on a very steep learning curve.
I joined the Dallas Gem and Mineral Society after moving to Dallas in 2018. I have traumatic nerve damage which triggered a central nervous condition that greatly affects me physically, medically and causes some cognitive and memory issues. These issues are the reason I bought the house across the street from my parents in Dallas.
As a kid we had been on a few rock hounding trips but it hadn't followed me into adulthood beyond liking them. My dad was a member of DGMS and it was an opportunity for me to get out of the house.
I started on the lapidary side, with a particular passion for opals. Then I met a widower and specimen lover by the name of Warner Ragan. Warner now lives in my guest room and spending most of the last 18 months together has ignited my passion for specimens. My memory is definitely a hindrance but for some reason the minerals stick more than most things do.
I am still very much learning but Warner has been a very good teacher. I don't have any particular preferences when it comes to minerals beyond, what I like. I find myself a fan the intricate and delicate specimens as well as strong bright colors.
Warner isn't particularly comfortable with the internet so I will likely be posting a lot on his/our behalf.
I hope to learn a lot from this group and hopefully contribute as much as I can.

Hello, My name is Russ Epp and I live in the province of Manitoba, Canada. I have been collecting since I was young and recently retired so now I have more time to devote to my various hobbies. I collect Canadian minerals and aesthetic and interesting minerals from around the world. Minerals from pegmatites particularily interest me. There are many mineral deposits in Southeastern Manitoba and I enjoy exploring and collecting in that area. There are many pegmatites and other types of deposits in greenstone belts. I also enjoy collecting fossils - Ordovician in the centre of the province and Cretaceous in the western part.

PostPosted: Nov 27, 2020 04:03    Post subject: Presentation of new members - Alain Abreal from France, passionate about minerals

Hello
my name is Alain ABREAL
PhD in materials, I have always been passionate about minerals.
I am writing to you from France
What I am looking for is the connections between the physics and chemistry of minerals and their sites.
I was interested in twins, and for 12 years, in garnets.
I wrote in particular a book of 970 pages on garnets and a website "toutsurlesgrenats"
https://www.yumpu.com/user/toutsurlesgrenats.free.fr
(link normalized by FMF)
fron garnets, crystallography, twins, color of minerals, etc
today, I work on the influence of manganese on the genesis, growth and habits of spessartines

PostPosted: Nov 27, 2020 23:32    Post subject: Re: Presentation of new members - Alain Abreal from France, passionate about minerals

I know Alain by the remarkable description of precision of the various twins he made. It is a real pleasure to read his articles on this frequently presented subject.
Alain reviews the various types of twins encountered in mineralogy while allowing us to find an answer to certain questions, such as the consequences of the existence of a multiple cell. Thus, we learn that the Quartz Japan twin (or of La Gardette) has a tetragonal pseudosymmetry by its multiple cell.
He is certainly a disciple of Georges Friedel from Strasbourg (the pope of twins around 1900).

Since Alain loves garnets, I show him a photo of spessartine microcrystals included in the Vielsalm coticule (the famous Belgian Whetstone). This rock was used to sharpen scalpels. No artificial imitation could match it because it could not remove waste.
These garnets have a size of 5 to 20 µm.
Such a photo of the coticule had not been taken.
