I went to this museum today and was very impressed. Lots of excellent Colorado and worldwide specimens as well as mining memorabilia. They just moved into a new 2 story building and admission is free. If you are coming to the Denver show make sure to stop by, it is only 20 minutes away in Golden, CO and well worth the trip. The below photo is of a huge Amazonite/Smokey Qz on display there, called "The Legend". Not the best quality photo as I used my cell phone.

The CSM Geology Museum really is superb, for its displays of Colorado and worldwide minerals, and as a museum that is actively adding new material to its displays.

Those who regularly come to the Denver Show know that on Wednesday evening of the show week (Wed. Sept. 15 this year) the Museum hosts a reception in its gallery with a silent auction taking place too, and to which all are invited to come. If you are in town for the show, please come if you can; starts about 7 p.m. I believe; a nice time to see the displays and meet the museum staff and many local and visiting collectors.

I was recently in Denver so went to the museum. I thought I would take a few photos of some minerals that are not from Colorado and the USA so as to tempt other visitors from out of town to visit this really great museum.

I had a few hours in the museum and even had a chance to see some of their older material, such as a few small specimens from Hiendelaencina. As you will see I have focussed on what interests me (UK and Spain) but I hope it gives you an idea why you should visit the museum.

James

Nice report, James. Confortable way of admiring museum specimens all over the world sitting down at home thousands miles far away.

The second newsletter for the Friends of the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum was sent out this week. It isn't hosted online yet and I can't upload it to the forum, but I can forward the newsletter if you would like to send me a message with your email address. Here are a few highlights:

--The annual open house is September 14th from 6-9PM. (11 new exibits!)
--The general meeting will be on September 22nd at the museum.
--The museum acquired some great new creedite and molybdenite from the Henderson Mine.
--A trip to the Henderson Mine (molybdenite) is planned for later this fall.

Check it out if you're in Colorado!

Hi,
Sorry a typo:

Sphalerite, Calcite
Aliva mine, Picos de Europa, Spain
A much larger specimen

Should say: Alava mine, Picos de Europa, Spain

No Vicen sorry, the right locality is:

Las Mánforas Mine (Áliva Mine), Camaleño, Picos de Europa, Cantabria, Spain.

Last weekend, June 3rd, I had the opportunity to visit the Geology Museum at CSM. Quite an impressive little museum with a very interesting array of minerals from Mexico and elsewhere. But this little summary of my visit will focus on Mexico.

Several partial collections from private collection are on exhibit and a marvelous sample of the Kerith Graeber Mexico Miniatures is on display. Just stunning specimens.

The Kerith Graeber Collection (selected specimens) .

All smokers.

This is unlikely to be from Taxco. I visited the museum with Dennis Beals and we both think that it is from Guanajuato. Anyway it was confirmed by Kerith that the piece was acquired in Taxco proper at one of the miner's house.

Both Dennis Beals and myself beleive that this is from Taxco, Guerrero rather than the an unknown mine in the adjacent state of Morelos. Often one could purchase minerals from Taxco in Cuernavaca Morelos.

I can't believe there were no pictures of perhaps the second best mineral exhibit of all time!

Collections manager, Ed Raines, has put together a showcase of Colorado Rare Earth minerals. This Glorious Batnäsite-(Ce) is just one example of rarely seen REE uglies.

The REE display is a temporary exhibit, so you must visit the School of Mines museum before September to see it!

Also noteworthy is the permanent exhibit of Zeolites; many from nearby North Table Mountain.
