Growing up in western Massachusetts in the 1960s, there were many locations one could visit to collect minerals. One of the earliest locations that I recall visiting was the Carlton Quarry in Chester, Vermont. This location was an abandoned soapstone quarry which was worked as early as 1894. In 1961, my dad drove a friend and I to the site, which was a large oval-shaped pit. Collecting was relatively easy, and we came home with several boxes of actinolite, talc, pyrite, magnetite, and ankerite. A few of these specimens collected over 60 years ago were placed in my collection and the rest I used for trading material. Some of the pieces collected that day are shown in the following images. The memory of that collecting trip was brought back a few days ago when I was going through some boxes in a storage shed. One was marked Carlton Quarry and opening that box brought back fond memories of a fine day in the field.
Sadly, this location is gone. The dumps have been leveled, there is a house that sits on the site, and the pit is a pond in the backyard.
