I'm glad you like the specimen, Carles, thanks!
I also was surprised to find such a large coloured elbaite specimen from the Erongo area. You're right that the Erongo Mountains are one of the world's best sources for schorls, but such large coloured elbaites are actually rare there and rather known from the pegmatites of Minas Gerais, California or Pakistan and Afghanistan. The more my Namibian collector's heart is happy with the specimen :-)
There are two more aspects that make that specimen interesting. I tried to capture them on photo:
First aspect is that the whole matrix block of the elbaite is one single double-terminated quartz of 14 cm (first picture). A bit weathered, partly broken and not perfectly grown, but i hope the shape of a double-terminated quartz becomes apparent in the picture.
The other aspect is that the greenish blue tourmaline has a red core that can be seen when the specimen is held against a light source (second picture). Not easy to make a picture, but i think the red colour inside is visible on the picture.
Cheers!

The main crystal (width 17 mm) held against a light source. The red colour of the inner crystal comes apparent. Compare this to the normal pictures taken in daylight where the crystals are simply greenish-blue (see my previous post). |

Carles and Tobias
These are from other pegmatite deposits in the Erongo REGION but NOT Erongo Mountains! , although only some deka kilometers from Erongo, but different in all aspects.
There are great many pegmatites on the plains around Erongo Mountains, but still in the Erongo region. Many of these pegmatites are known just for colored tourmalines and have been mined extensively for them. There are many colors to large sizes and often on quartz! Red, green, blue and combinations. These deposits are real big mines! WHile in the Erongo Mountains, although soem very big diggings, each is withing one cavity! The formation is very different although there are some large veins also in the Erongo Mtns and close to.

Thanks Peter, but none of us referred to the Erongo Mountains as locality of the large elbaite. The specimen comes from a pegmatite mine near Usakos, 30 miles south of the Erongo Mountains.
Cheers!

Yes Tobias
It just seemd as if you were confusing the deposits! I have been to booth the Erongo mountains and seen and dug some 30 pockets and to many of the larger pegmatites from Uis in the north to Usakos in the south. Namibia has produced some fabulous elbaites!
