Former collections of Phil Scalisi, Stuart Wilensky, Irv Brown, Story is that was also in the Harvard collection but no label to prove it. Largest cyrstal is 1.3 cm. tall.

A Medici family field trip to a pegmatite in an apple orchard in Albany, Maine yielded a couple of interesting specimens, a tapered common beryl (for which this pegmatite is noted) and a cat's eye beryl which was found loose in an approximately 15cm long, 3cm across void (apparently the gem core of a larger common beryl).

| The garnet is probably not from Rumford. The grossular that is known from there is very poor. Similarly, it is not like the grossulars in calcite from nearby Carthage. When I first saw your specimen, i thought it was from Casco, although it could be from Limerick.

| This tourmaline is very atypical of the Dunton Quarry, especially the termination. Many dealers sell Brazilian crystals as though they are from Newry. If this were from the Dunton Quarry, it should fluoresce in SW very bright bluish white. Can you post a SW UV picture?

What about the Pitts and Tenny Mine, Minot? Some grossulars I have collected there are quite similar.

Hi Pete,
The crystals are different to my eyes as is the matrix. I wouldn't consider Pitts-Tenney as a source. The color shade is certainly unlike Pitts-Tenney and very much like the grossulars that occur south of that area. The emergent diopsides on the crystal faces are very different as well. When the Pitts-Tenney crystals show these emergent diopside "inclusions", the matrix is not calcite rich and the grossular forms a solid layer under a crystallized grossular surface. That matrix is frequently etched as well.
