I can attest to that, I've got brown sea trout in my river in Iceland and it's not very deep in most places. It's amazing the sort of environments that salmonoid fish can live in. I'm amazed that they can find anything to eat.

Hi Pierre, I'm pleased you like the scenery, thank you for your comments. Yes the going is tough in places like this, even the shepherds use 4x4 quad bikes these days.. now one of those would be handy!
The hardest part is climbing down the cliff, jumping across the sea-channels, hopping across the boulders, negotiating the slimy, weedy rocks in places, not getting stranded by the tide (that happened once and it wasn't pleasant!) etc.
Still, it's something to do..
Mike

Hi Rei, thanks for your nice comments, yes fish get everywhere. The biggest fish I ever saw was in this area. I saw it in June 2008 from the cliff-top, and I reckon it was at least 6m long...
A Basking Shark!

Duirinish, Isle of Skye, Scotland Hopefully the zoom function will allow a closer look at the Basking Shark - can you see it near the edge of the rocks? Photo taken from the cliff-top about 180m high. Only had a 3x zoom on that camera at that time.. |

By the way,
can you see the sea-stack (pinnacle) in the far distance on the extreme right of the photo a few posts above (IMG_3561.JPG) ? Well here is a photo of the same sea-stack taken from the cliff top next to it. It is 60m high; the cliff top about 70m high. The sea-stack and it's smaller sisters are known as "Macleods' Maidens".
In the film 'Papillon' there is a famous scene where Steve McQueen runs to this cliff-top, hesitates, then in the next cut you see his 'double' jump off into the sea. Only it wasn't the cliff-top he jumped off - it was the sea-stack - because the water is much deeper there! Still, the guy must have had some balls to do it, with all due respect to Steve (RIP).
I bet not a lot of people know that.

Hi Mike,
I didn't know that story. I have been enjoying your posts.
Thanks.

Looking at that photos, I would say Steve's double had more balls than brains! :-) :-)

Thanks Don and Pierre.
On my latest Skye trip, I didn't come back with minerals, but I did manage to photograph a pair of ( I think ) sea - eagles, or white-tailed eagles. These magnificent birds were re-introduced on the Isle of Rhum in recent years from Norway, and are gradually spreading out across this part of the world.

Thank you Michael, and Don, glad you appreciate the scenery. I'd like to show more photo's, but I'm going to have to start a separate thread, methinks; something on the lines of : 'A photographic tour of the Skye coastline and mineral localities' perhaps..
It's not all barren wilderness, mind; I just prefer taking photo's of those kind of areas where I prefer to walk.
Mike :-)

I've been playing around with my collection somewhat. I have only two simple cabinets at the moment, and recently bought some LED lighting strips (4100K ).
I used to display my Skye zeolites separately from my Arran smoky quartz and microcline specimens, but I thought they looked a bit 'samey', so I thought I'd try mixing them up for variety.
I think the effect is quite dramatic... What do you reckon?
