The depth of talent on this site is inspiring. If I could put my two cents in, I think the photos by Matteo Chinellato might be a source for this exercise. I'm not sure how his copyright might be involved or if he would participate, but his technique is amazing, and lends itself to this effort. Would you consider your paintings to be "still life" in the classic sense? Thank you all for sharing your talents.A very cool idea.

Thanks to all of you for your interest in my work and my idea. My mineral paintings may be titled "Stillleben", but my technic is inspired by the impressionism. So the painting seems to live, the colours look like moving.
Before I showed my paintings in public, I asked Stefan Schorn, the boss of the Mineralatlas, wether any fotograph (Matteo Chinellato is one of them) would mind it, because of copyright. He told me, that no one would mind it, and until today I had no problems.

I think this vesuvianite from the Ploum gallery that Jordi just posted would be an excellent candidate.

Does anyone know the copyright status on this image?

You should ask it to Ploum (you can do it by PM) but I'm almost sure he will be happy letting you work with it.

Same thing if finally you decide to use another image from some one else...

The foto you choose Ed is wonderful, but a little bit difficult. We should wait, wich mineral the other artist will prefer.
Of course should the fotograph be involved. I wished the fotos would be a little bit larger, may be he has the same foto once more in higher resolution?
If you like to see a new painting from yesterday... Hinsdalit

I'm sure this runs against the sensibilities of our fine artists, but it might be fun to have a non-binding vote of our members as to which photo would be reproduced. Maybe keep it to the archives of the two mentioned photographers, or not. I would not view this as a competition because it is non-binding, and all the images posted here have some artistic value, even some of the worst one's (illustrative of how not to do it). Feel free to reject this idea out of hand as it is the product of a vacant mind. I'm snowed in and have no access to the field, for now. A happy and productive New Year to all. And thank you, Jordi, for your efforts in bringing the beauty, science and love of natural history to all.

Sorry, I dont't understand, what the voting should be about. My english is not perfect. Do you mean a kind of voting which photographers is the best (his fotos are the best to be used for artistic reproduction)?

It's not a vote on who's best. I think that would be fruitless, as all contributions have merit. In it's harshest interpretation, it would be a vote imposing the will of the forum on you fine artists, which when put that way, sounds like a really bad idea. I in no way mean to pass judgment on my fellow enthusiasts or their abilities, just a way of voicing opinion on which specimens we might like to see rendered in your particular technique. As i said, maybe it's a bad idea and leave it up to the artist alone to decide. In that case please for give the trespass.

Schwertner, I was worried the picture I chose might be too difficult. Vic, I actually like your idea of having non-participants decide which specimen to paint or at least narrow it down to a few that we can choose from. The reason I like it is that it might be difficult for us to all agree on which one to paint and if it's up to the rest of the forum or one designated person, then we use what we get and rise to the challenge in our own ways. It would be like Iron Chef. And like Scwertner said, it's best to select from images where a high resolution copy is available.
