Thank you, Tobi. Where we live there is not a great variety of minerals to be collected, but there is no shortage of Gypsum. I have collected Gypsum specimens from 5 or 6 localities in Oklahoma, and the habits are quite distinct. Years ago, I focused somewhat on building a suite of Gypsum from around the world since it was ubiquitous and relatively inexpensive. That suite now includes 83 Gypsum specimens from 52 different localities. It was fun building that suite, and I have used it several times for various programs and displays. Occasionally, I will come across a Gypsum specimen from a locality that is not represented in the collection, and I will add another piece to the suite.
I don't have a gypsum in my collection at the moment but it's a mineral that I do like. Not one of my favourites, but I like it. And when I come across the right specimen I would definitely add it to my collection. There are several localities that are interesting for me; Naica/Mexico, Cavnic/Romania, Fuentes de Ebro in Spain and the German locality Zimmersrode not far from where I live. Your Naica piece above is for sure one I would have chosen too!

Best regards
Tobi

A nice one, James, but the story connected with that specimens kills the joy of looking at it. I hope you got over it and can enjoy this beautiful piece.

As I said, it is bitter-sweet. I love it but still feel sad (30 years later)

PostPosted: Dec 19, 2022 10:08    Post subject: Re: Collection of Michael Shaw

James' story about his gypsum specimen reminded me that sometimes the history or story associated with a specimen eclipses the specimen itself. Such is the case with the specimen below.

This Chabazite once belonged to the Austrian mineral collector Moritz Lechner (1850-1903). Lechner's collection included other earlier well-known European collections. His collection of roughly 7,000 specimens passed to his son Adolph (1882-1952) upon his death. Shortly before Adoph's death, Austrian dealer Anton Berger purchased the collection and distributed about half of the specimens in the U.S., some through Willard Perkins in California and the majority through Schortmann’s Minerals. The brothers, Raymond and Alvin Schortmann ran a mineral business in Easthampton, Massachusetts about an hour from where I grew up. As a young collector, I visited their shop several times during the early 1960s and always managed to come away with fantastic treasures, most of which I still have today. Unlike James' sad story, this specimen evokes wonderful memories for me perusing the mineral specimens in their little shop.
