Hi Firmo, a nice pyrite matrix specimen. I never heard of that locality before and can't find it on Mindat. Is this maybe a Navajun specimen or has this locality such a simillar mineralization?

Regards
Tobi

Tobi,

Those mountains are full of sites. If you walk up almost any stream/gully you will find pyrite. Mostly small and weathered but if you dig you can find fresh ones. I think I found them in every stream I tried. I even found weathered ones to 2 cm. The locals say that you can find huge, weathered ones on the surface, as you herd your goats.

So, this locality could well be correct. We know MinDat is weak on Spanish localities which is why we have the FMF database (head to the Spanish side and check out the FMF locality database, which reflects the brilliant work by Inma at checking Spanish localities)

Hi Tobi.

Thank for your post.

They only said me this Range as locality due to it´s a new discovery and want to keep the exact point of finding secret. I bought these specimens in a small mineral show near Madrid two months ago.

As James says, there are many places in this region where you can find pyrites.

I think the golden glow makes them special. Navajún´s pyrites are usually more silver coloured.

Regards.

Aragonite from Ceferina Mine, Setares, Cantabria, Spain.

The Setares Mines were exploited for decades to obtain iron minerals. With the end of the mines came also the disappearance of the Setares mining town, created next to the Ceferina Mine. Now the wild invades everything making disappear almost all traces of mining activity in the area.

Could it be Chalcopyrite? The form and color might suggest that

Thank you James.

In this case the label is wrong as it says pyrite.

Fixed.
