"A Novice with a Small Collection (For Sale)"
Hello everyone!! My name is Bruce.
My interest with minerals began around May or June of 2009, when I received a small collection (some 30 specimens) in exchange for labor. I performed various carpentry related tasks for a Kingman, AZ resident prior to the sale of his home.
When my job was finished, the guy confessed (after some him-hawing) he didn't have enough cash to pay me. He told me he would pay me with something which was worth much more than he owed me.
He drug out this old dusty 'Tote-box', removed the lid and began rummaging through a whole bunch of packing and wrapping paper. Finally, he unwrapped what I thought was a piece of white coral. It was about 4"x 6" and seemed too soft to be coral, because some of it flaked off from his handling of it. He set it aside and reached to the bottom of the 'tote' saying, "Here we go!", and presented a plastic box to me while continuing to dig deep to the bottom of the tote.
I looked through the plexi-glass box to see a tag reading, "Brochantite and Flourite Soccorro, New Mexico". Also inside of the box, was a shipping receipt showing it to have been ordered on Christmas day of 1994, and the company was from Powell, Tennessee. The receipt showed he had paid $131.00. (shipping and tax included) He handed me a couple of small jewelry-type boxes and inside I saw another tag which read,"Aquamarine - $400.00" and the other had no price, but a tag which read,"Realgar - Keep in Dark".
Since then, my Asthma condition has worsened and I have been rendered unable to perform the duties of a production carpenter. I am currently unemployed and awaiting a decision from Social Security's Disability Department. I also have researched my collection, as to attempt determination of its value, during this time since accepting the mineral collection.
I was fortunate enough to have a mutual friend who knew and introduced me to the one and only "Ed Huskinson".
I had the pleasure of meeting with Ed at his home, where we visited on his back patio for a couple of hours. I also was privileged and honored, as he took the time and interest to examine and label each and every specimen within the collection. He identified EVERY ONE OF THEM! and also suggested their origin of collection!! Needless to say, I am very thankful for his assistance and am very impressed with his expertise!
To put the experience in simple terms: "Ed was Absolutely Amazing!" He recognized one of the specimens and said he was almost positive it was the same specimen he had collected from "The Blue Room" during his "college days" and said he had written a thesis about this particular specimen; some 45 years prior to our meeting! Ed is one of the most impressive men I have EVER had the privilege to have met in my life. He is also a very gracious host, amongst many other admirable qualities. I would attempt to list them, but this story is lengthy enough!
Dependent upon the response, replies, or general feedback this posting receives, is whether I post the actual list of the contents of this small yet (and I quote Ed) "Very nice collection".
* * By the way : While researching these specimens (over the past year or two) I have actually developed a fascination with the world of mineralogy. However, I MUST sell them; considering my current financial duress. * *
Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely,
Bruce Sevier
