PostPosted: Mar 23, 2008 17:15    Post subject: Colorado Quartz & Calcite ?

I recently acquired this small plate of clear Quartz crystals and several Mangano(slightly) Calcites. It was labeled as from Colorado. I've never seen Quartz quite like this from Colorado.

The Quartz are much clearer than I am used to seeing from Colorado. There is some very small Pyrites on the back of the plate also.

Could someone possible give me some insight as to if this could be from Colorado and a possible location ?

Dear Kevin,
I'm sorry that no one (including myself) has yet tried to respond to your question about the quartz & manganoan calcite specimen.
As I'm sure you know, there are many localities for quartz crystals in Colorado, many but not all of which are in the Silverton and Ouray areas in the San Juan Mountains. Most of the larger crystals tend to be of milky quartz, but some of the smaller crystals can certainly be clear too. I don't know of any way to be sure of where a specimen like yours might be from.
Sincerely, Pete Modreski, Denver, CO

Many thanks Pete,
I've been told by several others that Ouray area was a possibility.
I have several milky quartz specimens from the area, Ohio mine & grizzly bear mine, but I wasn't aware of the possibility of nice clear crystals.
It's a nice addition to my Colorado suite.
Kevin

What about the Idarado mine at Telluride?
