This rather large plate of Wulfenite with mimetite from the San Francisco mine is similar to the Romero plate in the Houston Museum of Nature and Science that I fell in love with enough to consider starting mineral collecting.
Haven't measured it yet, so will add that shortly.

Smoky Quartz
Intersection of Rt. 522 and Rt. 6
Goochland County, Virginia
Collected November, 2009
Interesting story. A fellow was bulldozing a new soccer field and ran across a vein of these pristine smoky quartz. He shut down the bulldozer, collected all he could find, started up the bulldozer and eventually "seeded" the soccer field with grass seed.
Keith Williams has them and is bringing them to Tucson, apparently he has all that were collected. This is the one we picked out.

Hi Gail,
i know about your special love for wulfenite, and this "beastie" is really a stunning specimen, wow! Congratulations to such an extraordinary large specimen from the San Francisco Mine, which in my opinion is one of the finest localities for wulfenite.
Cheers!

Thanks Tobias, we are just adding it to our catalogue as I type. I had wanted one for a long time and this came available yesterday, had to have it. The price was very very very reasonable, seems the size of the specimen was bigger than many wanted, but it was the size that intrigued me as that is not much smaller than the plate I first was "STUNNED" by and which made me want to know more about minerals.
I have many of them in smaller sizes...cabinet and on down, so this is a welcome addition to our suite.
And, just for the record, I am still stunned and amazed at San Francisco mine wulfenite.
( I even named one of our adopted dogs Wulfenite, that's how much I love them! )
Counting down the days to Tucson.....

Preparing a case for the Main Show in Tucson this year, we laid out a bunch of choices and will cull this evening. Some are also going in the large MAD case as well.
I have to smile, my husband actually thought we might not have enough to go in the 6 foot case! Um, I think we are just fine!
ha ha!

Part of what I am doing in Tucson, at the Westward Look show, is to host the Amateur event for the evening on Sunday as Wendell Wilson will host the panel of "famous" artists. I am trying my hand at painting minerals and thought you would like to see how it starts and progresses.
I admire mineral art, it is the way minerals were often documented above and beyond labeling.
Enjoy...

I am so enjoying this, haven't painted much in the last 7 years, although I was avid prior to that.
I am showing these on FMF but invite you to come see the art of all the other artists that will be displaying that night. I am in charge of the displays and getting their art all ready to be viewed.

Very nice work!
Will the display only be Sunday evening, or earlier in the day as well. We can't attend Sunday evening this year due to prior commitment. But it would be very enjoyable to see the art.

Joan, I am sorry it is just for the reception that evening. The panel will be artists moderated by Wendell Wilson, I will be doing the non panel artists off to the side of the reception area. Setting up etc. It is just for that one evening.
I will take lots of photos for the show report.
And will happily show you my paintings for grins. I am giving them all to Jim for valentine's day, he is my biggest fan. Aren't husbands nice?

Most certainly, Gail, as I'm sorry not to make it to the event. Too few evenings available, and as Jesse is indulging me in my desire for a music show on Saturday evening, I'm accompanying him to see an old friend and professor of his on Sunday.
Hopefully some of the pieces will also be over at the convention center later in the week.

Gail
I have made some minerals painting some years ago.
I can't show them,I have put them in a gallery, now closed, and I have tried to have them back, but the owner don't know where the painting are.
What is funny is that the painting are exactly what I do now with photography:minerals on a black background.
I had nothing to take photos in 2004,when I made the paintings.

Having owned an art gallery, and before that having worked for five different galleries, it is not uncommon to hear horror stories of art never returning to the artist due to galleries closing unexpectedly. I heard it quite often, and many times the artist had no way of getting their work back ever.
So sorry to hear, perhaps you will be like me...pick up your pencils, brushes, paints and try your hand at painting minerals again? I went about 7 years of not really painting much to delving into it again with this mineral painting event.
I am in good company with many wonderful artists and it is a joy to show the way minerals used to be catalogued and shared, through the hand painted version.
I love photography of minerals too, nice to have all means available.
Thanks for telling your story. Cheers!
