"The Portuguese Agency for the Investment (API), the Pirites Alentejanas, her ACTS Mines of Portugal and the canadian's of the Eurozinc signed yesterday the contract of investment that will allow to the mines of Aljustrel to start with the extraction already in 2008, reach an annual production of 80 thousand tons of zinc, 15 thousand tons of lead, 1,2 millions of silver concentrate and the production of copper from 2015."
This mine is closed over 14 years and it is predicted that the Pyrites found in the exploration is of the best quality.
One of the characteristics that more differentiate Aljustrel of other districts from Alentejo is his mining tradition, which remounts to the Roman time. Rich in leads of pyrite, the mines were explored along the centuries with the intention of extracting copper, sulphur and other metal.
I hope that this mine could contributed for the mineralogy with new and beautiful Portuguese minerals

Hi All,
Good that they are opening again !
I was there a few years ago. It was quite beautiful underground (depending on what someone thinks of beautiful of course ;-)

Aljustrel mines officially started working again yesterday.
Unfortunatly, cristalized samples are very uncommon, due to the origin of the pyrite (in fact complex fine grain polimetalic sulfides) deposits wich are of marine sedimentary formation.
The danger for the secondary iron and copper sulfates of Algares gallery is not the start of the works, but the recovery that is being done on the old mine dumps and contaminated soils.

Sorry, I put some incorrect information in my last post.
The origin of the pyrite orebody of Aljustrel is the result of marine and magmatic hidrotermal fluids leaching vulcanic and sedimentary rocks, in a marine environment, originating mineralized solutions.
Aljustrel polymetallic sulfides contain mainly Pyrite but also Calcopyrite, Sphalerite, Galena and small amounts of Tetrahedrite-Tennantite, Arsenopyrite, Bournonite and Pyrrhotite.
