PostPosted: Mar 08, 2013 11:15    Post subject: Marburg Museum - first visit 2013

Hi all,

today i visited the Marburg Museum for the first time in 2013. I tried to take some photos from the special exhibition that features specimens from old collections, also i made some photos of new specimens and of those i didn't capture before - so most of the these impressions should be new for you. So i hope you'll enjoy this small visit ...

Cheers!
Tobi

It is really nice to see some of the specimens displayed with their old/original dealer or collector labels. Adds a nice bit of history to the display. I can't recall ever seeing another museum do this, however.

Hello Tobi,

Thanks for the photos. The bournonite is great just as the Neudorf galena :-)

Cheers

You are actually a lucky man, Tobi, because of your living so close to this excellent Marburg Museum.

Perfect atmosphere, old labels, nice classic and selected specimens. Wow!!

Greetings

Thanks. As Antonio said, you are lucky to live near such a wonderful museum. I wonder if this is a European thing. I have heard that serious mineral collecting really came into its own in Europe. I wonder if Europe has a greater density of fine mineral displays than other continents.

Tobi, many thanks for your excellent photos !

Tetrahedrite/ 2521 photo, can say it is an exceptional specimen.
I would like to make a short notice about the locality mentioned there. Almost all pieces came from Boteș, Alba Co. Apuseni mining area were found in the late 19th and first half of the 20th century. Now, this area is practically unapproachable. All researches and data available until now mentions for Tetrahedrite's occurrences: Crăciunești, Ormindea, Săliște, Ruda-Barza, Curechiu, Stănija, Zlatna (all these localities near Brad loc.) and most reprezentative is Bucium (Bucsony, Bucsum), near Câmpeni locality.
Tennantite is not mentioned from Boteș, nor from Bucium.

Nicu

PostPosted: Mar 09, 2013 03:35    Post subject: Re: Marburg Museum - first visit 2013

I'm glad you enjoyed my report, guys! :-)

@Jesse: Our museum often has some specimens from older collections on display, but at the moment there's a special exhibition about old collections - that's why there are so many of them. The history of the Marburg Museum is connected to our nearly 600 y/o university, so the history of many sciences such as mineralogy is very present here.

@Chris: I knew you would like those specimens ... because i know you love for sulfides ;-)

@Antonio: Indeed i'm a lucky man to live nearby such a museum (it takes me 12 minutes by car to get there), and even after 20 years of knowing the museum i still enjoy to visit it!

@Don: You're welcome :-)

@Matt: Don't know if this is a European thing. I can only say how it is in Germany: Due to our long tradition of mining and mineralogy we have several public collections/museums such like the one in Marburg. But it's not that every city has its own mineral museum. Marburg has an old university where geologic studies have a long tradition, that's why we have such a great museum in our rather small town.

@Nicu: There are several wrong labels/localities in the museum, one of the few things i have to criticise about the museum.
