Don, Laura and I spent more than a few minutes gazing into this piece P1060757.JPG. It was mesmerizing, and you did a great job capturing the clarity and depth.

Thank you for your comment, Michael. That IS an amazing specimen, crystal and water clear.
I was thinking about you and Laura this morning while going through some pictures for a future post. I will point it out to you when I post it.
Regards,
Don

Don, image 1060757 JPG, and several others are of Lawrence Stoller's fantastic work. He shares Daniel's gallery. Mostly SiO2 and bronze. Large and fine.

Vic,
Thanks for posting these great pictures of Lawrence Stoller's works. I saw an interview with him and Dave Wilber on WHIT, and I think his work is amazing.
Does the lovely lady with you have a first name?
AND, more importantly, how do you rate a golf cart? :-)

Pardon me. It's my lovely wife Cindy. Anything I know about photography I owe to her. She shines as a portrait photographer.
As for the golf cart, it's the only way to ride herd in the parking lot at Zinn Suites. Rodeo Days came early this year.

That stuff Danny brought to Tucson is so awesome, i'm drooling over these pictures ;-)
But what's that thing with brown inclusions on P1060757.JPG? This is one i do not like, but i'm curious to know what it is? Calcite with copper inclusions?

Tobi, it's one of Lawrence's polished pieces. Quartz with chlorite (?) inclusions, I think. The size, maybe 24-30 cm., clarity and lighting set it off in person. More art than science?

Vic, lucky man,
I thought it was your daughter.
Tobi,
That is one of the labels that I did not photograph. I didn't do a lot of pictures in Lawrence Stoller's gallery because they are works of art. What I know is that he carves and polishes large crystals of quartz and make elaborate metal bases for his pieces. His works are beautiful and he has a profound understanding how to use and play with light in his works. I may be mistaken but in retrospect I think that this is a large water clear quartz crystal with an interesting inclusion and perhaps even a polished face or two for better visualization of the interior inclusion. I didn't examine it that closely but wanted to capture as many images as I could to share with The Forum members who were not fortunate enough to make it to Tucson this year. I have a fluorite crystal that I have posted that is 100% natural that is every bit as clear as this one but certainly not as large.
Vic is a man of few words. He had already answered your question while I was writing my reply.
I guess I was too verbose. You know the old adage, "The more a man says the less he knows." Perfectly appropriate in this case.
Don

Dr. Bob Rietschel and his wife, Connie, and me. Bob and I spent most of the 1970's serving in the U.S. Army. I earned my undergraduate degree and received my Army commission through the ROTC Program at the University of Arkansas on 01 June 1968. I did my medical internship at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, then a year as a general medical officer at Fort Benning, Georgia, then back to Brooke for my dermatology residency. Bob and I were both dermatology residents at Brooke. After finishing at Fort Sam I was assigned to Missouri where I served as Chief, Department of Medicine and Chief, Department of Dermatology at General Leonard Wood Army Hospital, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Bob stayed on as staff at Brooke and then in civilian life served as Chief of Dermatology at Emory, Ochsner, and later at the Tucson VA Hospital, and University of Arizona where he retired in 2008. He has written 121 articles published in medical journals and authored or co-authored several textbooks on dermatology.
Bob and Connie picked us up Gwen and me and took us to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. |

Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is one of our favorite Tucson attractions. Did you see the flight demonstration with the Harris' hawks? Awesome!

Michael,
We didn't make it to all the attractions and even missed seeing the falcons because we didn't have the energy to walk down the hill and then back up :-). Gwen and I probably would not have gone to the museum at all if Bob and Connie had not invited us. We had a nice visit with them, however.

Dr.Lum, looking at all the photographs you have posted of the Tucson Mineral Lecture Series at the Pueblo Gem & Mineral Show, of our showroom in the International Fine Mineral Building at the same show and of the dinner reception we hosted for you and Gwen at Ali Baba's Restaurant, brings back fond memories.
At this dinner reception, Arif and I were also honored by the attendance of our other close friends, Greg & Ginny Toomey, Bryan Swoboda & his Bluecap Production crew, Dave Wilber, LTC (Retd) Jerry Savage, Federico Pezzotta, Federico Barlocher and Jim & Linda Beach
Tucson 2014 is already history and your detailed report is a gift for all those who could not attend and a gift for those that could. Thank you very much for this.
There were many highlights, for Arif and I. The opportunity to welcome you and Gwen to Tucson and the joy to be able to introduce you both to so many of our wonderful friends. Another was to welcome Gail and Jim Spann to the Pueblo Gem & Mineral Show and the tremendous success of all of the Tucson Mineral lecture Series.
For 2015, we will have the honor to present Dr. John White, the former curator of the prestigious Smithsonian Institution as one of our many guest speakers.
Thank you again for all the dedication, time and effort you have put into your 2014 Tucson Show Report. We all look forward to your 2015 Tucson Show Report.

Hello Aisha and Arif,
Thank you for your nice comments on my 2014 Tucson Show Report. I think I told you before the show that I was not going to do a report because, well, frankly, it was a lot of work and took so much time.
However, I since I spent most of my budget in the first hour or so after going into the dealers' rooms, I said "what the heck, I'll take some pictures." I had a good game plan but just poor execution.
I think this line in your letter to me "For 2015, we will have the honor to present Dr. John White, the former curator of the prestigious Smithsonian Institution," should read "we have the honor to present Dr. John White, the PRESTIGIOUS former curator of the Smithsonian Institution."
.
Warm regards,
Don |
Greetings Dr.Lum,
I agree with you 100%, therefore the sentence regarding our 2015 Tucson Mineral Lecture Series at the Pueblo Gem & Mineral Show, has been rephrased.
We will have the honor to present Dr. John White, the PRESTIGIOUS former curator of the Smithsonian Institution.
Cheers!
Aisha & Arif

Michael, this is the bird's nest that was replaced by calcite. I know you and Laura have seen this before since you have been to the Museum many times. I had confused this with the aragonite pearls that you recently posted from your collection. |
