Crinoids for sure with that spoke pattern and stem. Sometimes fossils turn up in the most unusual places. I once found a trilobite in a quartzite of all places. Normally metamorphism would have destroyed the fossil for sure, but there it was. Third rule of geology: if it did happen it can happen!

Try this discussion, nurbo to get into some of those N England Carboniferous rugose corals:
https://www.discussfossils.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3326&PID=44798
(link normalized by FMF)
They show some nice images in cross-section and longitudinal section. Examples of these corals end up as pebbles on the Yorkshire beaches.
There are some fancy terms for coral growth forms, yours being "fasciculate" (corallites are cylindrical but not in contact). A subset of fasciculate is "phaceloid" (corallites are more or less parallel). Searching on "Lithostrotion" will yield some nice images.
Crinoid columnals do not have the spaced septae visible in your photos (the "spokes"), nor show comparable selective dissolution. Have fun!

I try not to use the word septae except on Sundays! Amazing the discussion these dead little things can inspire. Thanks Ru! This is fun.

Thanks for the help with that fossil, back to the minerals now.
Here is a before and a few after shots of a piece I picked up at Bakewell last year, obviously a Topaz from Topaz Mountain in Utah, Id been after one for a bit but I wanted a thumbnail and didnt want to pay much for it, I read someplace that thumbnails were hard to come by since the Topaz crystals tend to ping off the Rhyolite very easily, I saw this on a table for £4 (~$6) all it needed was a careful trim, the matrix is laced with platy crystals of Haematite, tiny Bixbyite cubes and rods of what may be Pseudobrookite all far too small to get photo's of with my current camera.

Dehne here.
The discs have crystallised in the bedding and slip planes of the kaolinite and during that process, despite the inclusion of the clay in the crystallisation process, there is a volume change in the space occupied by the disc and the clay. This means there are tensions set up in the azurite and the clay host during the space change process. The azurite surface is distorted during the crystallisation process and the majority of the discs over 2 to 3 cms diameter exhibit different sides. Ridge forms on azurite disc outer surfaces are common and are reminiscent of concretionary growth forms. Where the azurite is completely successful in pushing aside the enclosing clay during crystallisation, the azurite is of a very high quality but still in the form of conjoined flattened crystals.
So on both upper and lower surfaces of the azurite discs, there have been micro interactions taking place between the clay and azurite surfaces that result in different upper and lower surfaces. It is normal in the mine to find areas of discs/suns over a square metre that have exactly the same upper surfaces but different lower surfaces. (that may be a bit harder to explain).
Hence the discs are not being compressed/flattened but are simply expressing space competition forms. See Rocks and Minerals Nov-Dec 2012 azurite sun article for a wider perspective.

Thanks Dehne, how fascinating, are these discs all orientated in the same direction in the matrix? I had a look on mindat and all the photo's seem to show the discs in pretty much the same orientation, I was wondering (if it is possible) if one was to form at 90 degrees to the others how might that affect the ridged/flat structure of the surface?
Today Ive got my latest Wulfenite addition, Ive not seen many Wulfies from Mt Malosa before this one came my way a few weeks ago, I hope one day to upgrade it to a piece with terminated Quartz crystals instead of busted ones.
I also got this Calcite thumbnail from Brownley Hill.

Hi Nurbo,
Wulfenite don't match Mt. Malosa (at least at my knowledge)
Are you sure it is from there?

Hi Jordi,
Im as sure as I can be with something i bought online from a seller i dont know personally. Mindat has ... https://www.mindat.org/photo-445503.html though that only says "Zomba district" . When I saw this piece for sale I checked online there are two references (Aside from the mindat one) to these samples on different website's, reading further into it though apparently they were available at Tucson as "Stolzite - Wulfenite series" labelled as being from Mt Malosa, though the other reference refers to them as "Zomba District" with no mention of Mt Malosa. Maybe another forum member can be more precise?
In the meantime If you want to change it to,"Stolzite - Wulfenite series. Zomba District, Malawi Africa" thats is probably the most accurate at the present time.

Done Nurbo, but as you can see the Wulfenite-Stolzite series are not listed in MIndat for Zomba District -> https://www.mindat.org/loc-125829.html and as the same text of the photo https://www.mindat.org/photo-445503.html says:
Note: The mineral species Wulfenite is not listed in our database for this locality. This specimen may be misidentified or the mindat list of minerals at this locality may be incomplete.
so, probably better to wait for more opinions.... Knut? ;-)

re the Wulfenite-Stolzite
I messaged the dealer I bought it from and I should be getting a copy of the Xrd he had done sometime soon, he also says the locality is definitely Mt Malosa too.
In the meantime ... Barstows Trench Pyromorphite, what a colour..

Cheers Pierre, I didnt realise these pictures are of the same area of the sample.
Here is the analysis of the Malawi piece ...
WO3 .0115 wt. %
MoO3 38.512
P2O5 0.088
SiO2 0.076
Al2O3 0.055
PbO 59.881
FeO 0.114
MgO 0.022
CaO 0.133
MnO 0.009
the d-spacings and intensities
4.958 (15)
3.224 (100)
2.721 (35)
2.030 (20)
2.019 (35)
1.790 (20)
1.661 (25)
So it looks like Wulfenite after all.
