Hello,
I received a few photos of a mineral specimen from a seller stating the specimen is damage free. I myself have not detected any based on the pics but I would like a second opinion.
Anyone interested in taking a look? Thanks. |

If the dealer accepts returns, then all it will likely cost is return shipping if you hold it in your hands, and decide you don't like it.
Photos never faithfully reproduce a specimen. Sometimes the photos make an item look damaged when it is not, and vice versa. Camera sensors also can't reliably capture the same range and subtlety of colors that a human eye can see. That is why most of us internet dealers send minerals out for personal inspection, and accept returns. |

The seller is from Europe and the specimen is a large cabinet size. I know returning via USPS international will be expensive. |

Without commenting on photos,"damage free" is a relative term. Completely intact all the way around, nothing showing on presentation face, main crystals intact but some nicks where it was trimmed, contacted areas, only visible under a microscope, internal cloudiness,...where does one draw the line? One person's "defective" is another person's "perfection" (or, at least, "don't care").

Well when you have OCD and are prone to noticing the details like myself, I am definitely have somewhat higher expectations than the average collector. For me that would be any nicks, cleaves, bruises, dings, wear, and contact damage on the crystals. |

If I had a larger budget and more room for a large collection, my opinion would be different. But with my circumstances, a small high-quality mineral collection is ideal for me.
I do have a few specimens with minor to light damage, as shown on my collection thread. For my rarer and more valued pieces, I prefer undamaged specimens.
I hope that makes sense to you. |

That would be a good idea if I was interested in them, but I do not have the equipment to appreciate them. Plus I like holding my specimens up close with my eyes. |

Sorry Casimir, that was a bit 'tongue in the cheek'. You are right, micromounts are fine if you have all the right equipment to appreciate their detail.
