It is with sad heart to report that Bill Pinch passed away. He was a long time friend of ours whose knowledge of minerals, especially rare species, was unmatched in the mineral community. The rare mercury chloride mineral, pinchite, was named for him. Bill started the Rochester Mineral Symposium in the early 1970s, which continues to this day, after 40+ years. His first mineral collection was sold to the Canadian Museum of Nature in the early 1990s, and many of his finest minerals are on display there in Ottawa.
Our sincere and heartfelt condolences to his wife, Jackie, and his son and daughter. Bill will be sadly missed by many.

Sad beyond words! I have great memories of attending Bill's open house and collection viewing during one of the early Rochester Mineral Symposia.

When I heard about Bill Pinch's passing so much of Bill's life and contributions came flooding into my head. One of those thoughts was about last years Rochester Symposium because Michael Bainbridge was able to get Bill to attend after so many years of boycotting the Symposium over an unfortunate misunderstanding. That event gave all who were there a chance to celebrate his remarkable accomplishments. It was very emotional for everyone. Charles Key said we have lost one of the greats. I fully agree with him but that doesn't begin to capture what Bill has done for mineralogy and for mineral lovers worldwide.
My thoughts are also with his family over this terrible loss.

There will be a special program during the 2018 Rochester Mineral Symposium which will focus on Bill's life and contributions to the mineral world. I hope many can attend this tribute next year.

I am sure to interpret the feelings of all of us who have been awarded the Pinch Medal if I say we are doubly sorry for the sad news of Bill's departure, and also doubly proud for the honor of being associated with this great mineralogist, friend and gentleman. Our heartfelt sympathy to Jackie and their children.
