PostPosted: Dec 19, 2017 16:22    Post subject: Fluorite Ojuela mine, Mexico

On a small show in Holland I bought this specimen: Purple Fluorite cubes on a matrix. On the Fluorite is a white mineral.
I think the white mineral is Quartz and not Calcite or am I wrong.
The matrix is a kind of Goethite?

Can anyone tell me about the white mineral?
Is this piece from the latest finds of Fluorite in Ojuela (2013??) or is it an earlier piece? I can't find a comparable piece on mindat.
Are they from a certain level in the mine??

Regards

Harry

Looks like Calcite to me, but a little HCL will tell you for sure. If Calcite it will fizz

Yes, thanks I know but I won't put some HCl on this piece :-)

But maye someone else has a similar specimen and knows what the combination is.

Here is a specimen I acquired in 2009, around the time of the find. The fluorite has no overgrowth, but I would expect that it would be calcite rather than quartz, as Ojuela is a carbonate-hosted replacement type deposit. Peter Megaw is, however, the expert on all things Mexican, and could likely tell you more than you ever wanted to know about the mine and it's minerals!

Thanks Jesse. Great specimen you have.
Maybe my specimen is also from 2009, but the matrix of your specimen is different.
I also think it is Calcite but lets wait to see if Peter writes a comment.

Harry
