Anyone willing to guess what the new name will be for the town of Asbestos, and how many labels we will all have to change?

I'm guessing they change it to Chrysotile. ;-)

Is the mineral named after the town? Even if it is, I think the name will remain..... It is not a specific species name anyway...

Asbestos is a name used for fine fibrous (asbestiform) forms of (usually) amphibole or serpentine (chrysotile). The fibrous amphibole may be (for example) anthophyllite, grunerite, tremolite, actinolite or crocidolite.

R.I.P. Town of Asbestos.....

Thanks to both. Please confirm that the new locality name should be:

Chrysotile, Les Sources RCM, Estrie, Québec, Canada

so

Jeffrey Mine, Chrysotile, Les Sources RCM, Estrie, Québec, Canada ?

And for those of us who believe in being historically correct based on the known time frame the minerals where mined, what is wrong with using the old name. That too should be correct.

Sure. So, better:

Chrysotile (Asbestos), Les Sources RCM, Estrie, Québec, Canada

and

Jeffrey Mine, Chrysotile (Asbestos), Les Sources RCM, Estrie, Québec, Canada

Perhaps more likely, since the RCM used to be Asbestos RCM, and is now Les Sources RCM, would be to name the town Les Sources.

Probably too early to start re-labeling specimens and revising catalogs!

They say that the town will decide next year, so let's wait and see what they call it.

I'm guessing the name change is driven by a need to promote the town for business and tourism. During one collecting trip to Jeffrey Mine, we scoured every store in town, hoping to find a coveted T-shirt that would say "Asbestos, Quebec". It was nowhere to be found, so I think the perceived health hazards of asbestos were detrimental to the local souvenir business.

How about T-shirts [or 'hair-shirts'] made out of asbestos? Would likely pass muster with the current EPA gang.....oh, forgot....wrong country....

And for those of us not from Quebec or elsewhere in Canada, what in the world does RCM stand for? (Thank you, please!)

Aha....now the question becomes: What does one call the lung disease that used to be called 'asbestosis'? Val-des-Sources-RCM-osis?
