Please help identify. This is the same specimen on both sides. I've done some research myself I'm coming up with chords but I'm sure that's probably wrong.

Not sure what you mean by 'chords', as it is not a mineral I have ever heard of.

I will do my best to try to test. I'm not sure what the word "chord " was supposed to mean either :). It must have been spell check. I have however come up with some possibilities like I stated earlier smokey quartz or possibly topaz. The more I look the more confused I get but thank you for looking.

Sadly, no it is not clearer. Where is it from? Based on the photos so far I have no ideas what it is

It looks like slag to me, but only a guess.

Could it be mica? Does it cleave in layers?

in case it serves for anything, it looks to my eyes as slag, very dark smokey quartz broken or obsidian.
Taken in account that obsidian is mean to be had near a volcano and no locality is given, I would think it is not obsidian. Also, looks as an odd one if it was....

For smokey quartz, same as said for obsidian. In case it would be, looks extremely odd.,
So, possibilities, it is not

As a slag, it has all possibilities.... Looks like the piece of "anything" that was shown to me when very young.... Looked as obsidian, just it was found in a street in Barcelona, an area where no volcanoes are not known... Then, simply a mass of slag from anywhere and anytime....

To me.just slag....

I just got this yesterday. A neighbor of mine was moving and gave me a few specimens once she saw my humble collection.
A geode , amethyst and this. I just got home from work and I'll attempt a couple tests. I'm not sure where she got it from and I live in Northern, Ohio, USA. (Not sure if that's relevant yet.)
Either way I am even curious now after reading your responses. Thank you for taking an interest and helping.

That first side of the rock, your first picture, looks very much like granite--exactly like granite. it seems! (Though as was mentioned, gravel derived from decomposed granite, can be very similar.) But the other side--it certainly looks "glassy", but many things, that are not really "glass", can look glassy--like smoky quartz, some radioactive "metamict" minerals (is the specimen unusually heavy?), as well as obsidian, slag, and so on.
For you, there is probably no substitute for finding someone to bring the rock to in person--at a rock shop, or... well, a knowledgeable proprietor of a rock shop might be the very best person to try to show it to. Just from photos, for something like this, it's always going to be a matter of just "educated guesses".
