For those interested in mining history, the GIA has just released the Spring issue of Gems & Gemology which features an article on the history of the Chivor Emerald mine (Colombia).

Haven't taken the time to read it all, but as I quickly glanced through I was wondering about El Toro.... which isn't marked on fig.3
....is that Gachala and not Chivor area? |

To avoid clogging the map, only the historical/main mines are indicated.
I am aware of at least two El Toro emerald mines in the Eastern Belt.
The Gachalá El Toro mine is located between Matecaña (known for the 'emerald gastropods') and Las Cruces (where a monster crystal of 7,015 carats was found in 1969 and called later 'La Emilia').
Actually there are 5 mines lined up over 1,200m along the San Fernando fault.
From NE to SW: Matecaña, El Toro, El Perro, El Diamante, and Las Cruces.
The Chivor El Toro mine is located NE of Buenavista, on the northern side of Rio Rucio.
~15 years ago, Chivor El Toro produced whitish opaque emerald aggregates embedded in crumbly brown limonite - am sure you have seen some samples of this find. |

For those eagerly awaiting the rest of the story, I am happy to announce that Part II of the article on the history of the Chivor Emerald mine has just been released in the latest GIA (Gemological Institute of America) Gems & Gemology, Summer 2020, Vol. 56, No. 2.
The article concludes a sweeping two-part series chronicling the history of this iconic Colombian emerald mine. It examines events from 1924 to 1970, when the mine was owned by American interests. While the early era was marked by stock market speculation and scandal, there were also highly productive periods at the fabled mine.
