I bought an entire rock collection at an estate sale. I wish I had known the rock hound before he passed away. However I have a couple of round blackish rocks. One is 1.5 inches in diameter and the other is about 1 inch in diameter. I thought at first they may be corroded musket balls, but they do not attract a magnet, so are not iron based. They are a bit heavy but at the same time I feel they may be hollow. Please look at the attached photo. Can any of you more experienced than I am tell me what these are?

My guess is that theses are "Moqui Marbles", i.e. iron/sandstone concretions typically found in desert areas, e.g. in northern Arizona .... more info can be found on the internet

I have a couple of similar balls, neither of which are sandstone. 'Got them years ago before I realized how important locality information is. One is almost like granite, the other is probably marble.
I was told back then they were rounded by being in a rock hole in a stream and rolled around in the hole. There is a state park in Herkimer, NY that has two foot wide holes extending several feet down with large balls in them.

| I have one - it is a volcanic bomb from a volcano in Fife, Scotland (Hill of Tarvit), so about 300 million years ago it must have shot out from the volcano

Thanks SWK for this lead! After doing research on Hopi Stones (i.e. Moqui Marbles) I have concluded that they are indeed Moqui Marbles! Yay! People tend to collect them in pairs because they believe they contain male and female energies. But everything seems right that these are what you said. Thanks again!
