PostPosted: Oct 26, 2021 19:01    Post subject: Clinoclase, Boleo, Baja California, Mexico ?

Hello, Does anyone have any knowledge concerning the occurrence of Clinoclase at a locality in/near Boleo in Baja California, Mexico? I have acquired a specimen with an old typewritten Herb Obodda label (highly reputable dealer from New York active in the 60s-70s-80s-90s). I am especially interested in any Journal articles describing the locality. Sadly Mindat does not identify the locality in its database for Clinoclase.

Hi,

I'm not an expert on this area or on clinoclase, but just a guess: Is it confirmed that this is clinoclase? Could it be atacamite? I think I have seen similiar ones from that area ...

But you could ask Peter Megaw - I think he will know :-)

Regards
Tobi

There is hardly any arsenic in the Boleo district, so clinoclase seems unlikely.

Hello, All I have to go on is the old label from Herb Obodda, whose collection was ultimately purchased by Arkenstone. Mr. Obodda was a highly reputable dealer, but that doesn't mean somebody got the identification wrong. I'll check the image repository on Mindat for atacamite with Boleo mining districts' provenance.
Thanks everyone for your valued assistance!

The Mineralogical Record issue on Boleo (v. 29, n.1) makes no mention of clinoclase, nor is it listed as reported for the locality on Mindat.

Hello All, thank you for your responses. I have reached out to the Smithsonian NMNH and received the following reply:
"Mr. French,
Your e-mail of 30 October, concerning Mexican atacamite, has been forwarded to me for reply. Checking Wilson, I. V. and V. S. Rocha (1955. Geology and Ore deposits of the Boleo copper district Baja California, Mexico. U. S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 273), atacamite is listed (page 71) as being found in Boléo. However, further work on Boléo specimens, cited in Bariand, P., et al. (1998. Mexico Special Issue I. Boléo. The Mineralogical Record. 29:1:1-49), note that the species is in fact paratacamite (page 42). Your inquiry prompted me to check our collection, and sure enough we have five specimens from Boléo listed as atacamite. One of them looks exactly like your specimens. Unfortunately for you, none of our specimens nor the references cited above, give exact mine localities. As a side note, the Obodda label is a rarity on its own.
I hope this information is of assistance to you. Also, thank you for calling attention to this as I can now correct the labels and database for our specimens.

Hello, somehow missed this. I also have paratacamite that looks like this and would agree with Alfredo that an arsenate from Boleo would be exceptional given an overall lack of arsenic
